  • Car insurance while kid at college

My youngest daughter is going to college this fall and cannot have a car on campus for the first 2 years. The car will stay at our house and not be used except when DD is home on breaks.

I called my insurance company and asked about options. They offered a discount for a college student without a car on campus and it was $128 / 6 months discount off of the $586 / 6 months they charge me for her car. So that's pretty good. I can also drop all coverage except theft and comprehensive which should take it down more.

Seems I should be able to just drop her completely while she's at school and then add her when she comes home each time. Is that possible? She's the reason I pay a lot and taking her off completely would be ideal.

What have you done in this situation?

Probably not possible if her legal address is your home. All licensed drivers in the house have to be on the policy.

    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Wait, am I reading this right, you only get $128 off your six month premium?? Ugh my DD is going away too I hoped I'd save more than that, especially with DS16 coming right up behind her. Plus we have DD20. DS might be waiting a while longer, these premiums really are a killer.

      I need to call.

Consider yourself lucky! I had 3 kids on my policy for several years, what a huge financial hit. Even with 2 kids left on it, it's still the largest monthly bill I have after a mortgage payment.

I was lucky enough (and I mean lucky!) that none of my kids have ever had a ticket or accident. I can only guess what I'd be paying if they had.

The other thing besides car insurance is the need for a million dollar umbrella policy in case they (or me) have a serious accident that my car insurance won't completely cover.
