  • gig economy?

What do you guys think about this gig economy? Do you like it? Did you do it? Do you think it really pays? I do a lot of tax returns and I have yet to see someone really make money off of uber, lyft, door dash, etc. I see a lot of people quitting because they try it for 1-2 months and it doesn't pay. Then there are the people who pick it up as a second job so to them it's worth it. Even a couple hundred bucks a month pays for their car payment they told me. But it's not the primary income nor is it a good way to make money. These people do it because they have a full time job and so they want a flexible way to make extra money.

But how are people making a living? I can't see how it's at all profitable for people to do it as a primary job. When they have to pay all their expenses? I don't fault uber or lyft or doordash for taking advantage of the system. That people are willing to work for $2-3/hr. They don't make these people drive or deliver goods. But really that many people can't see how little they are making? I mean the cost of rides has gone up but if it were to go up to taxi prices would people still be riding? Maybe? Because it's easier to get a uber or lyft instead of calling and waiting for a taxi.

I will say our neighbor she gets a car service when she leaves on the 5 am flight. My husband tended to get the more expensive book ahead uber more like a taxi service but just easier to book with phone instead of calling. So what is the difference?

How far will this go before people realize that they are losing money in this gig economy?

Are you saying the Uber/Lyft drivers are only making $2-3/hour? That seems really low. I mean it is a tipped position so I guess it's similar to being a restaurant server except then you don't have auto expenses to pay out of that money.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

That certainly doesn't seem worth it, even as a side job. You mentioned somebody making a couple hundred dollars a month. That would require working about 100 hours if the $2/hr is correct. I find it hard to believe it's really that low.

People in this realm are getting their heads beat in currently.
There aren't too many gigs out there with everything being closed and a lot of odd jobs drying up due to no one wanting anyone in or around their houses.

This topic has come up before.
I think that it's a good way to bridge between jobs or a good side job.
But, I wouldn't want to rely solely on "gigs" to get by.
At some point your "gig" should either fade away as you find real employment or morph into an actual business.

maybe but I feel like a lot of people are making a living now cobbling together gig jobs. People are working more and more little bits of jobs.

              Times are extraordinary.
There is nothing wrong with cobbling together jobs or hustling any way that you can think of to scrape by.
But, I wouldn't want that to be my lifestyle permanently.
