  • Finding a large sum of Cash

Here's an interesting situation that happened to me. While out and about recently I found a large sum of cash, lets say it was well over a $1,000. The way it was found it was pretty obvious that it wasn't drug money or stolen from a bank.

Where I live, Craigslist is the go to place for lost and found items. Because I'm the honest guy that I am, I quickly put an ad in the Lost and Found section and assumed I'd be contacted by the true owner fairly quickly. The owner would obviously have to describe the amount along with other items found with the money.

Unfortunately I was bombarded by every dishonest person in the world claiming it was there's even though they didn't know the amount or any other facts. It got so bad that people were claiming it was a big scam and I was going to be reported and so on......

I got so sick of the emails that I took it off Craigslist and just handed over to the Police. So far no one has claimed it and eventually I'll get it if it's not claimed.

I think the next time I find money I'll just keep my mouth shut and keep it. Not worth the grief.

People are so greedy to want something that isn't even theirs! You did the right thing turning it into the police. I wonder if the person who lost it has thought to check there! Or did before you brought it?

I hope you get it for being so honest. I just assumed the State would somehow get the money. Cool.

Im sure the police will "find" the rightful owner. Dont worry...you wont see a penny of that money.

If I found a grand I would give it to best buy and walk out with some nice electronics. Or maybe blow it while im on vacation.

While I admire your honesty, I also note your naivety thinking that listing free money on craigslist was a good idea.

I'm a pretty ethical guy, I think, but if I found cash on the street and there was no visible way to know where it came from, it would be going in my pocket.

I just didn't expect so many idiots thinking they could just guess the amount and what else was found with it. I assumed who lost it would have contacted me on the first day. I live in a small town so it's not like it's downtown LA or anything.

As for being honest and naive, honest yes, naive not even close. Just a believer in karma.

The Police already recontacted me about the process of reclaiming the money once the holding period was over. They in fact don't do any investigating, they simply hold the money in the evidence safe until the release date. They said if someone hasn't claimed it in the first day or two then there's little chance of it being claimed at all.

While I hope it finds it's original owner because clearly someone is out a lot of money, but if not, I hope you put it to good use. Nothing wrong with karma. Enjoy it if it results in a windfall for you.

Craigslist is not the place to go for something like that.

You were right to turn it over to the police, but you should have went there first.

I've never found more than $20, so I've never had to deal with this issue, but I would definitely go to the police if I found a large sum.

Glad to see there are still a few honest people out there.

Moral of this story is do not carry large sums of cash! Use a credit card.

Where I live, Craigslist is the go-to place for stuff like this so I assumed someone would have contacted me that day with the exact description and amount.

At first I thought great, I'm a $1,000.+ richer! But fortunately, although this amount is nice to find, I don't really need it and it won't change anything in my life like it would some people. Assuming I finally get it, it'll go towards our next vacation.

It pays to be honest. Not that anyones following this but 90 days later and the money is all mind! Police were more than happy to release it to me. I'm still surprised no one claimed it though.

I do feel sorry for the person who lost it, but now you can enjoy that money with a clear conscience, so good for you!

                            Good for you.

The person who lost it probably had no idea where they lost it and just assumed it was gone for good, never expecting that someone finding unmarked cash would do anything but keep it.
