Being a generation X is terrible I am the youngest of Xers and most of my friends were looking for job at the dot.com bust. Promises all seemed to fade away fast.

Its horrible being any generation, really. This is why we need to make sure we
hedge our bets as we move through life.

There may turn out to be a happy ending to this story.

DD got a call from her manager a little while ago. Nothing is confirmed or definite yet but it sounds like her job may have gotten some of the government stimulus money. If so, they may be able to pay her up to 8 weeks of missed salary. She doesn't have any details but I doubt the manager would have made those calls if there wasn't some degree of certainty to it. That would just be a rude tease. So now she just has to wait and see what happens. I'll update when she hears anything.

        * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
        * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Good for her! They may need to rehire staff, so she may have just got her job back. Check to see it she needs to return her unemployment if she gets back pay. Hope it works out! Good luck!

She wasn’t eligible for unemployment so nothing to give back.

Sounds like they went for the PPP loan and got it. This type of situation is perfect for her. It doesn't work as well for closed businesses with employees collecting unemployment since they won't be happy that their unemployment got cut off.

My DD24 got laid off cause of all this CoVid stuff. She's all alone in IN, we are in OH, and now she's sick with mono, of all the luck for the poor kid.

I've been reading a lot learning about the IN unemployment system, what a mess, like lots of other states. She and I had learned together by watching videos and facebook live presentations. What I've discovered is with unemployment, you have to really educate yourself on your states system, so when you do go to file, you do everything right. DD just filed on 4/23, but was let go on 4/9. We needed to wait till she got her last pay check, just a lot of little nuances in the system that would reject you if you had money coming in.

She went in today to file her first claim and looks like all is well on her status, no errors, thank goodness. It takes 21 days after your initial application to get your first check from IN. Not sure on the amount she will get but with the $600/wk from the fed it should put her pretty close to what she was making after tax on her job.

This is a bad situation, but it's been a good life lesson for my DD. She has about 1 year of expenses in an emergency fund so she will be fine. Of course, she was setting that $$ aside for a new car, so that will have to wait if she needs to live on it. Fingers crossed that she finds another job in the next few months after she's recovered from mono. She's a biomedical engineer that works on hip and knee replacement development, so we need those elective surgeries to come back on line!!

I'm glad your dd was called back to work DisneySteve!

Does she not expect her job to call her back?

No Steve, she was a contract worker. She worked for a company called Zimmer-Biomet. You either get in by getting a co-op, which she didn't; but had friends who had, or by doing the contract route.

She really was hoping to get hired! They usually kept people on contract for 2 years then offered them a job.

Looking back they were having problems before all this Covid stuff. They merged hip and knee depts and she made it thru that cut. She's made a lot of good contacts there and rubbed shoulders with a lot of influential people. She's not your typical engineer, she's very out going, joined a Toastmasters Club there and did some presentations at some meetings. I do have confidence she'll land on her feet, just scary right now, the unknown.

I hope she bounces into something else quickly.

I think we will see a lot of businesses fail or at least downsize as a result of Covid although that wasn't the true cause. It will be businesses that were on really shaky ground or barely hanging on before this hit and then this just became the final straw.

Good News! She was contacted by another recruiter for she thinks a contract job. He asked when she was available to talk and she said Monday because she's hoping with a few more days rest she'll feel a little better to chat, this mono is kicking her behind!

She thinks it's to work at MedTronic, anyone ever hear of them? I remember watching Jim Kramer back in the early 2000's and him singing this companies praises. I guess they are making face shields for hospitals and she's heard they are hiring. Fingers crossed!!

I am a little concerned with her mono, she's on day 8, that virus can you leave you down for a while. I had it for 3 weeks myself in college, not fun!

In aust if you are unemployed you get a set payment right now it has a bonus attached to it for 6 months so its $1177 pf (or bi weekly as you say) usually its $650ish...plus they get payments for kids etc...you don't have have an end date so you get paid that till you get a job.....so that is good...your system seems weird

I think we put an end date on unemployment so people will look for work and get off the system! Or else a lot of people would be content to just take unemployment and lounge around all day.

DD got her first paycheck on Friday. It was actually for a little more than she typically earns. They paid her for a couple more hours per week than she was working at the time of the shutdown. She would still much rather be working, but at least it's nice to have this money start coming in.
