  • Why I shop on Amazon

We went to Home Depot this morning for a few items. One item was a new dimmer switch for our sitting room. The dimmer we have in there isn't compatible now that we've changed over to LED bulbs. HD had the dimmer in the color we wanted (ivory) but didn't have the matching switch plate. I went to HD's website where they do have it for $4.03. I checked Amazon and it was $3.99, so essentially the same. BUT HD wanted $5.99 for shipping while Amazon was free shipping. Obviously I got it from Amazon. I just feel a little cheated because when we were in the store I checked Amazon for the switch itself and it was $1 cheaper but I opted to buy it at HD since I was there and had it in my hand. I should have just ordered both items on Amazon.

I was in Park City this week. Found a cool stem book that can physically be turned into a beehive. It was $20 and I decided to get it for DD. Checked amazon out of curiosity and same book was $8. Felt kind of bad for not supporting the local business but I couldn’t unsee the savings and convenience of not having to carry the book around the rest of the day and fit it in my travel bag home.

Yes. I realize we're paying for that, but the benefits and savings far outweigh the cost. Amazon Prime is $10/month. Look at riverwed's example above. Saved $12 on a single item. I saved $5.99 shipping on a single item. We order from Amazon a couple of times a week typically. Prices are lower and those savings add up very quickly. Plus we use Amazon Prime video to watch a few shows that we like so you're not just paying for discounted/expedited shipping.

I have a baby shower the end of this month. Got my invite in December, jumped on Amazon and bought the gift from the baby registry.

Jump to this week. Got another baby shower invite for February. Jumped on Amazon, see that this mom wants the same gift I bought the last mom so I hit order again. The price is now $12 cheaper for the same item. Call 'em up will you give me a price adjustment? No it's over 14 days. Ok well I can return it till March guess I'll return it and buy it again at the cheaper price for my end of January shower too.

Take the package to work and UPS picks it up for me. I am a little salty that I feel they raised prices in December for the Holiday Season though, but other than that love the convenience of Amazon.

I read that once and then saw a conflicting article from a bunch of staff who loved working there. Hard to believe anything in the media these days

Minimum wage is $7.25. In 2018, Amazon was paying $11 and then raised it to $15, so this simply isn't true. They actually pay more than double minimum wage.

Just pulled up all my Amazon orders for 2019 - Spent $101 on 4 orders
                  Dog gear $41
                  Book $14
                  $15 Personal Care Items
                  $10 Gum
                  $7 Golf Glove
                  $8 Cell Phone Case
                  $6 Cleaning Brushes

I find Amazon to be pretty hit or miss. Sometimes it's price competitive and sometimes it's not. Pet stuff is usually pretty good. Books are almost always price-competitive, but I usually get mine from the library. Some of the things I bought in 2019 I did so because DH received an Amazon gift card for his birthday and the prices were "good enough." I guess I don't buy enough non-consumables for me to be an ideal Amazon customer. Definitely not enough to justify a Prime membership.

Great example of "there's no one size fits all" when it comes to personal finance.

Meh... They don't hide the fact they're doing that. If you leave an item in your cart long enough (this is my shopping process), they start telling you "this product has gone up/down in price $x.xx since it was added to the cart." Eventually, they'll even email you with those notices.

Amazon, even more than most online retailers, frequently adjust their pricing based on what they perceive as market forces. Similar to how airlines do the same thing.

If you practice what you preach, then you'll never step foot in any restaurant. The people that bring you your food are not even making minimum wage. And almost all fast food places pay their staff minimum wage.

I just checked. We placed 58 orders in 2019. I'm not about to add it all up. So on average just over 1 order a week.

Recent purchases cover a wide variety of items:
printer ink cartridges, hair ties, a bathing suit, a book, light bulbs, socks, sneakers, protein bars, vitamins, a video game, a backpack, bar cherries, hubcaps, etc. Pretty much anything and everything that we could buy.

And you didn't have drive to the store to get those items. Granted someone delivered, but they were driving that route anyway. Also saved you time, which is worth a lot these days. Likely less impulse buying without going into a physical store. And probably saves a little wear and tear on your vehicle too.

Exactly. And on all but one of the items I listed (the hubcaps), we saved money, sometimes quite a bit. So again, we pay $10/month for Prime but we more than make up for it in savings both monetary and time/hassle. And you're absolutely right about impulse buying. If I need printer cartridges, I open the app, order the cartridges, and go on with my day. I don't browse around the office supply store or decide to stop in the craft place next door or grab a frozen yogurt from the place next to that.

well we live in australia and our workers get paid pretty well...they don't rely on tips...minimum wage here is $19.49 if permanent part time/full time and casuals get paid more....but I guess you can't rely on media for your information...I'm wondering from the people who work at amazon what area they work in...the ones in higher management probably like their jobs a whole lot better than the cashiers...just saying
