  • Do you do your own yard work?

Do you do your own yard work or do you pay to have someone else mow, trim, mulch, etc.? Hubby does our yard work except for the fertilizer ... He has someone do granular stuff since I am allergic to lawn chemicals.

I pay someone to mow the lawn and rake the leaves.

    I trim the hedges myself.

We don't do any other yard work (mulch, fertilizer, thatching, etc.). I don't believe in that stuff.

We also don't water the lawn. We let nature take care of that.

Since we are currently in an apartment it is all taken care of for us, however we have always mowed, and fertilized our own lawn. My husband was a part owner of a lawn company for a couple years and learned alot about how to take care of a lawn. Water actually keeps most weeds at bay. If you find you have a lot of weeds in the high heat of summer we would recommend watering at least an inch a week, and applying a weed killer to get rid of what has already started to grow.

CCF, that makes sense about water keeping weeds at bay since weeds grow when grass doesn't.

Yep, that is exactly right if you keep the grass growing it crowds out the weeds. It would be the healthiest way to keep weeds away.

yes. I enjoy doing yardwork. It's relaxing for me and gives me a sense of accomplishment when it's finished. I did landscaping back in college, so I have some knowledge of caring for plants and etc.

I'm in the process of buying a new house right now and have plans for a few landscaping beds and a small apple orchard.

Starting this year, we've done all yard work ourselves. My husband would always do most of the mowing, but hire someone a couple times a year for when it was REALLY hot. We would also use the same guy every fall to gt rid of our leaves. This year, we took a whole weekend and raked and raked, and put the kids to work (ages 4 and 7) and let them earn some extra money ($1 for every bag of leaves they filled). It probably cost us about $40 in lawn bags (we had a LOT of leaves) and the guy would have charged us about $300. We got a lot of satisfaction from doing it ourselves though.

We don't really do anything else to our yard.

Yes, we do our own. No grass, but lots of landscaped areas. Weed control is our biggest issue. Everything is established, and has survived drought, so we do not have to water (at all).

It's a pain in the ass, really, and I feel guilty if I don't stay on top of it. My next home will be rural and won't have landscaping, just well-maintained defensible space in an otherwise natural setting.
                  History will judge the complicit.

I like yard work, mow about 1.5 acres around the house and barns. Takes about 3-4 hours if I mow, weed eat and then blow things off. We have good equipment, so it's not too tough. Do lots of mowing on the farm too with big tractor and 7' bush hog. That project takes 12-16 hours if I do it all, but it's only needed 3-4 times per year.

I do all the yard work and hubby does all the field work. I enjoy the mowing and weed eating, I enjoy seeing the results.

It has been interesting reading your posts...thank you.

I always have to laugh when we watch HGTV when we see some of the people who want big yards and you kind of wonder if they even know how to mow.

One thing I told my wife when we were signing on our house was that I couldn't wait to mow my own yard. This day its still satisfying to make sure my yard looks good. I take the lazy route when it comes to trimming because I have a chainlink fence, so its much easier to just spray the fence line than to constantly tear up weedeater string, because I am sure we all know trying to reload those things are a pain.

This is exactly how we tend to our yard.
