I am pricing out ways to move and surprised that penske is going to cost $3000 just to rent the truck to drive. Mileage is unlimited but doesn't include gas. This is a one way rental. And it just seems like strange that moving ourselves would be so expensive. I am starting to price out pods and movers. I can't imagine that that it's so much more expensive to hire movers or use pods

As much as I loathe U-Haul, check into their pricing structure as well. They tend to be cheaper.
Budget would be another option...around here I like them because they have always had newer/nicer trucks.
The reality is, if you've just accepted an offer, your closing/moveout date is in the PRIME moving season. Everybody moves at that time of year because kids are just getting out of school, college students are moving back home, etc. Prices on trucks, movers, skyrocket.
ABF U-Pack might be another service to look into. Basically a local move to a dropoff location where you load it into a cargo container, and pick it up in a locale close to your new home.History will judge the complicit.

I've done this a couple of times. The formula is:
Distance [mileage], + Weight (critical factor in a long distance move) + Time + Move size/Difficulty + Crew size + Gas and a separate fee for Storage is extra if they can't get access to off load the trailer on arrival. There will be a fee if they pick up from both your home and your storage unit.
