  • which bills can you pay with your credit card without a fee?

I can pay the following bills by credit card (without a fee):
    car insurance
    cable/internet/cell
    garbage

however I cannot pay for the following with credit card (some dont allow it at all, some only allow with a high fee):
    gas
    electric
    water
    mortgage
    property taxes
    HOA

I wish I could pay everything by credit card but so far, no luck.

We can pay everything *but* our HOA and gas company. I don't think the gas company (PG&E) takes credit cards, period. (Correction: PG&E does take credit payments for a fee. Seems like a strange holdout. I understand why the small HOA doesn't want to deal with credit payments).

I suppose there is also the mortgage.

Life insurance and disability insurance also does not take credit payments, at current. All of our other insurances will (no fees): home, auto, medical, etc.

Property taxes and state and IRS all charge fees for tax payments.

Interestingly our DMV and government utilities have accepted no-free credit payments for many years (includes water and electric).

I charge EVERYTHING and my yearly American Express Card cash reward runs over $1,000. every year. The only monthly bill I have that I can't charge without a fee is Gas/Electric bill. Up until recently I was able to charge all of my kids college costs. That was a nice one until they started charging a fee. Of course daily purchases like gas, food and shopping are a given. It always makes me wonder why people pay cash for large purchases when it's so easy to get rewards by charging.

      Cell phone (Verizon)
      Home phone (ATT)
      Garbage
      Water/Sewer bill
      Vehicle insurance (AAA)
      Homeowners insurance (AAA)
      California DMV registration fee's
      Quarterly Pest Control
      SeriousXM Radio
Home Warranty Plan (American Home Shield)

The only bills we can't pay with a CC without a fee is property taxes, water bill and our life insurance. I pay everything else with the CC.

I wish we could pay our mortgage with a credit card (mortgage amount includes property taxes to escrow). At 1% we'd be getting close to $400/year in rewards alone.
          History will judge the complicit.

I wish we could have also when we still had one.

It's important to confirm fees/service charge so that paying with your CC doesn't cost more than traditional payment. The CC providers charge vendors for using their service and they often pass that forward via a convenience fee.

Good point! When we bought an inexpensive used fishing boat the dealer had a 3 percent fee if you used CC. I wrote a check.
