  • Best day ever?

What was your best day ever?

Easily the day I married my DH solo, a year before the big wedding I still cherish our private justice of the peace wedding with just us. 10 years this year. So not even the "big" wedding day.

There's the obvious such as wedding day, child being born, etc. But I'll opt for the unexpected.

We once had just the perfect vacation/exploration day where everything went right. Landed in Lisbon on an early morning flight. Had a nice cup of espresso in an outdoor patio before heading south out of the city, which was an unexpectedly beautiful drive. Drove down the coast for a couple hours. Found a quiet, lovely seaside town to have lunch in. Ate giant sardines and amazing paella at a wonderful local restaurant overlooking the beach. One of those places that is just a great find. Took a walk along the water. Weather was sunny and perfect. Got back in the car, more beautiful driving along the coast - most of this area is national preservation land. Stumbled across the most incredible national park/beach area - very rugged and felt more California-like than European. Hung out at the beach and wandered on some cliffpaths for a while. It was not crowded and not touristy. Continued south towards the Algarve in Portugal. Arrived at the Cape St. Vincent lighthouse in perfect time to watch the sunset over the most amazing cliffs overlooking the Atlantic I've ever seen. It was spectacular. Found a local hotel using a combination of my husband's Blackberry, which miraculously worked just long enough to book the room/my mom checking from home - after mildly panicking because we'd waited until the last minute. Got so lucky and at a good price got what may have been the last room at a great little nearby hotel in the corner of a quaint town plaza overlooking the church. It was all too perfect. The gods were with us that day.

This was all even more unexpected because we just trying to make the best out of a driving trip to a wedding in Spain where the cheaper flight option was out of Lisbon. Turned out to be the best part of the trip aside from the wedding itself.

Sometimes you arrive at a particular place life-wise through a series of fortunate events. I'm not talking luck, but rather the culmination of observations and small decisions that end up with something you couldn't arrive at otherwise.

For us, it was the chance of having close friends, who by chance invited us to their summer lake cottage for a dinner and boat ride, that by chance we went to after me being on the fence on going, that by chance we noticed a cottage in ill repair two lots down, that by chance was for sale with no visible signage, that by chance we put a bid in and were able to buy for cash.

I don't think I've had my best day ever yet. Perhaps if I get to the point where I've developed enough skills to make sure I am employed for 12 months of the year and maintain that then that will be the best day ever.

Some so far though were my graduation from college for both degrees, my graduation party for the second degree, the day I got a call for the temp job that made my hourly rate double and too for a job that required my brain, that was really good I was figuring out whether or not I could afford to buy my brother a 12.00 birthday present. I got the phone call, went in the bathroom stall to cry huge tears of joy and proceeded to go ahead and get him a gift. That was the job that allowed me to start paying off debt and teach me the valuable lesson of having an emergency fund.

The day my husband proposed with the family heirloom he was able to repair. And the day of our big wedding was nice, it was a miracle we were able to pull it off at all since it was all family who helped set up, a family owned venue etc and it was paid in full by myself although my dad did chip in a several hundred dollars which was nice.

I feel like I have actually had many best days. One on my 15th birthday. My folks for a treat took me to the big town library for several hours (you have to understand my love of reading and books), came home to find my best friends at my house for a surprise birthday party and then later went to a Halloween costume party at the church we has just started going to where I didn't know anybody. Sat down next to a girl at the party than took a good look at this 'girls' hands and realized it was guy dressed up like a girl. We ended up talking to each other all evening and he became my first boyfriend that we only 'broke up' because my family moved clear across the US in August 10 months later. We found each other on the internet almost 20 years ago and still are friends and maintain contact. He was a most marvelous and special boyfriend!

One of the other great days was my youngest son's graduation from HS party. He is my autistic son and at times I despaired of him every graduating much less with honors like he did. I had an open house style party for him (common in our area) and ended up with a houseful of guests including this guy with a really nice set of shoulders that I didn't know. Finally found a way to meet him and ending up ignoring everyone else and we talked nonstop for probably half an hour or more before I remembered I was the hostess of this shindig. He became a fast friend and we were married less than a year later. It is so funny when people ask me where we met and I tell them in my living room!

I've had plenty of great, wonderful days and I have had days that I can look back and see where my life completely pivoted on what I had done and decisions I had made on that day. Now for me any day that I can get up with minimal pain, a clear head, no fatigue and can do something special like go to the Dairy Queen for a treat, or go do a little non-essential shopping, just being out when the sun is shining and no need for a winter coat, is a great day. Every chance I get to smell the roses, I do. I have so many bad days due to my health, I cherish each and every 'good' day that I get. That is how you can have great days. Look at the little things in life and see just how precious they are.

Lots and lots of best days. In recent memory and with regards to finances, we were able to sell our old place last year free and clear, and we realized a tidy little profit in the process. Second only to that was receiving a high offer in a very uncertain market, which is the offer that carried us through to a sale. That was a great day. We were expecting to take a loss and then were surprised with a fantastic offer from great buyers.

When my first gf told me she liked me.

The day I got my first real job offer, during the depths of the financial crisis.

It's like a drug (from what I've heard :-)...). The first time feels amazing and the rest of the times, you're just chasing that high.

I would not like to pick one because it would lead to discounting all the others. I try to have my best day every day.
