  • Things to always buy new

One of the best ways to save money is to buy things used instead of new, and this is a great recommendation is most cases. But as we all know, there are always exceptions to the rule. I'm just curious about the things that you feel should always be purchased new.

The first things that come to mind are socks, bras & undies. And food, of course-who wants to eat pre-eaten food. YEEECH!

I suspect I will think of others in days to come.

        baby car seats

personal care items - I know a lot of people sell open bottles of cosmetics and hair care products online but I don't think it is worth the risk that they have been tampered with.

My personal list of "to always buy new" is not very long. Only stuff like "underwear" came to mind.

People sell open beauty products? Ugh! I'll add that to my list; didn't know there was a market for that.

I also think that *never* is a strong word. There are many things (like infant carseats) that I'd probably not buy used, myself, but in a pinch I absolutley would. For me they would be in the "to buy cautiously when used" column.

Good point. I work in a very poor area and I'm quite sure folks around here buy things used that I wouldn't buy used but that may be the only way they can afford to own them. I'd much rather see them put their kid in a used carseat than hold the kid on their lap.

I think it also depends where you are making the purchase. If you are buying from a friend or relative who you know and trust and you are certain the carseat has never been involved in an accident, that's different than buying one at your local Goodwill store.

Another thing that I always buy new is computers. They have a short enough lifespan as is. I don't see the point in buying one that's already a couple of years old. I'd rather just buy a cheaper brand new one if money was tight. You can get a pretty decent laptop for about $300. How much more can you really save buying used?

I bought some barely used snow tires a few years ago, and they still had enough tread to be sold again, which I did.

                Things I don't buy used:
                Bedding items
                Personal care products
                Food, drinks
Most furniture (e.g. couch, loveseat, comfy chairs)

I would say soft furniture. Nothing at all wrong with buying used hard items like tables, bookcases, desks, etc. I've gotten that stuff used plenty of times. The problem with soft items like sofas, mattresses, etc. is there is no way to clean them.

Yes exactly. I was trying to find a way to describe "soft furniture" and should have just said that! I have bought a bunch of used book cases, file cabinets, desks, etc.

Generally speaking, I would only buy a new boat. Particularly if I didn't know the owner personally and the boat's history. Unless it was a low-end small investment type of purchase, or a jon boat.

underwear, soft furniture, carseats possibly. Things that expire, hence my issue with old carseats.

For me we should always buy new cosmetics for our use ,it's really important.
