Waow. I can't think of anything that I was able to buy and that would strike me as "memorable".

Unfortunately, I don't have enough money to buy those things that are REALLY worth buying.

Such as roof over the head with all cash down.
Or even better, FREEDOM from having to work a job.

THOSE are huge - but cost a lot.

Otherwise - everything else is trinket.
Even fine jewelry or any consumable would qualify as trinket in my book.

As for degrees...since someone mentioned it, a regular Joe should never have to pay money for a degree.
Considering a degree granted to a regular person (non rich) is just a way to make that person a cog in the machine, that is to work for the benefit of a larger organization or society at large (hence the expression "contributing member of society")... why in the world should degrees be anything but free, I don't understand.

I stayed true to my beliefs and managed to not pay a penny for my education (and I went as high as degrees can possibly go). I just cringe at the thought that my children might not be able to skip the "education" rip off.

Go to slave school - and pay for your slave certification too.
    Hmmmm...

There have some really good things folks have mentioned so far.

I thought of a couple more today. It was raining out. I pulled my North Face rain jacket out of the closet and stayed nice and warm and comfortable while doing my errands today.

The other is a sewing machine I purchased about 35 years ago at a Sears Outlet store. I believe I paid $200.00 for it. It doesn't do much beyond a few basic stitches, but it sure has been handy over the years. I pulled it out before Christmas to make a new Christmas stocking for DS. I decided to make a few more things from the fabric scraps. I was having a good time with it.

Ah, my North Face Jacket one of my best AND probably one of my worst purchases. I was finance-dumb fresh out of college. I used my first paycheck to zero out my credit card then for some ungodly reason, I opened up a new one later that winter to buy a $300 North Face jacket.

I still have it a decade later and it's gotten me through some tough winters, so it's proven is value and over time it's been amortized to about $30/year—not bad IMO. If I had to do it all over, I'd never opened that credit card. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

The best thing I ever bought was my girlfriend's electric oven. She fell in love with baking and she has been baking and cooking a lot ever since.
