Tough question. I could answer that many different ways depending on how I interpret the question.
One answer that comes to mind is "our house". It is very comforting to have come home to the same place every day for the past 18+ years. There is kind of an inner peace that comes with that type of stability in your life. No matter how crazy my day has been, I always feel better when I get home. I love having our own place, being able to decorate it however we like, being able to change things if we decide to or keep things the same. Of course, there are headaches to being a homeowner but I wouldn't trade that for anything.

* Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.
A coulpe of my favorites: a digital meat thermometer... Realized that I've been neeedkesssly over cooking my meat for years. The other is a great pair of pull on winter boots. No laces to fumble with.
Our set of stainless steel Calphalon cookware. After wearing out 3 or 4 sets of cookware over the years, we finally spent the money (about $400) for a top-quality set. We've had it for several years now and it still looks brand new. It cooks everything very evenly and is very easy to clean up. No soaking and scrubbing required. We love to cook and doing it with good quality equipment makes a huge difference.

Hands down, the best thing I've ever bought is our condo. We have sufficient space in this 4 story, townhouse style unit and merely lock the door and leave to take an international contract or take an extended trip. There is sufficient garden space on the patio for me to 'play in the dirt.' The deck is DH's grilling domain, reading the morning paper or following You Tube favorites.
I fuss about the ancient complex but the well thought out, gorgeous, mature landscaping comes from a different century with a different value system and thrives in spite of our hostile climate
I was ready to list another power tool or three, but I think the best thing we've bought was our lake property. We both grew up with literally dozens of summers spent at a cozy lake where we would enjoy: family gatherings, boating, fishing, swimming, bike riding, playing with friends, etc.
We found a good place nearby that gives our kids and their friends a similar environment where they and their friends can make memories and just enjoy being kids.
Ever? Probably my shop-vac. Made tens of thousands of $'s detailing cars once I bought that Still use it to this day, and it's 7 years old! Go Rigid!
Recently? YNAB. One program, the same price as a video game, made me pay attention to where my money is, and is going. Finally, I'm in charge of my money!
1. A Weber gas grill. It helps me eat at home, eat healthy, it's fun to use, and it's really well built. I grill probably at least 150 nights/year.
2. As much as I've b*tched about my home (and as much as I want to get rid of it), the intangible value of coming home to the same place every day, for the last 7-ish years has a lot of value. And every now and then, on a nice day, the light hits it right, and I remember what it looked like when I started this adventure, and what it looks like now, and I feel an extreme sense of accomplishment. I just have to block out thinking about all the work it still needs. lol
