IT support. Plenty of downtime. Although the few IT jobs that Ive had in the past there were also lots of downtime to waste time.

Awesome. So you handle PC repairs and network maintenance? What is the pay like if you don't mind me asking?

I'm salaried, government. Typically I work about 35 hours a week, using leave to make up the difference to 40. Never over 40. Work/life balance is intensely important to me. Family comes first. I don't feel sorry though for people who work 50+ hours a week or commute for 2 hours a day. That is their choice.

Its 60k,yep i'm the only one supporting users in the office, software/hardware with some networking, printers and iphones. Theres a lot to be left to desire in terms of salary...but considering I have next to no stress, fixed 40 hour week, I like the people I work with and the most obvious, theres a lot of downtime...plus my boss is in another state which doesnt hurt either even though I really like him....it would be hard for me to give up this job.

I dont know what it would take in terms of salary for me to leave this job for one that would have more stress? Not sure if that topic has come up yet in any other thread but it would be interesting to hear how much more someone would have to make to take on more stress.

It is an interesting conundrum. I don't make a lot of money, my benefits are average, and while I like what I do for the most part, it doesn't get me excited. Yet I leave work at work everyday. Stress is low most of the time. I like who I work with. I can leave anytime I need to and have a flexible schedule. Heck, I have my own office.

How much are these type of perks worth? Am I selling myself short for not seeking more? Should one constantly seek career advancement for the sake of money or success (which everyone defines differently)?

One of my friends works for a guy whos self made, no college education...he's worth 10 million+. But all he does is work. I'm not sure how much stress he has, im guessing not very much now that he's sold his business and bought another one...the gears are already turning and its a really stable company. That being said I dont envy him one single bit. He literally has no hobbies, never takes vacation, no friends, and is single. Work is his life, which is fine if thats what makes him happy. But I wouldnt trade my life for his anyday.

35 hours on regular shift with 2 days of a week (when I work at home).
Or 45 hours a week in 3 shifts with 12_14 hour hotel stays out of town, and no set days all is on call work. The benefit of the on call is about 40% more pay. I have the luxury of bidding on what style I want to work whenever, depending on my seniority at the time.

I only work 15 hours per week. I do study full-time though.

When I worked I used to average about 60 hours a week, although some weeks had me doing 16+ hour shifts so some weeks I used to top out at 80.

Whatever happened to the 40 hour work week?

I work about 13 hours a week. At one job, where I am a residental caregiver, I'm legally allowed to sleep, though when the hurricanes go through the "ally", I usually don't. It is a really small, family business residentail home I work at. I do some work with an agency on an "as needed" bases.

In my non-paid work time, I do volunteer work, mostly with my church, and enjoy being at home. (Gas is high.)

I have no kids and no "honey-pie".

Just about 40. I'm lucky now that whenever a job is getting in the way of more important things in life, I have the courage to walk away.

I work an 8 hour shift M-F, so technically 40... but I leave the house at 7:30am and get home at 5:30pm, so I spend ~10 hours a day or 50 hours per week 'working'... Can't snap my fingers and be at work.. yet!
