  • How many people do you know who've been laid off?

I can think of at least 12 relatives, friends and acquaintances who've been laid off in the past few months. It seems crazy to me, but I know there are far worse cases out there. I was curious how job losses are affecting your social circles?

          Jim,

Ouch, been there, done that. We were at the closing on our house and I got a call from a coworker wanting to know if I had got laid off, and when I got in the next day I had probably 10 people come up to me and tell me they thought I had got laid off and just waked out when they didn't see me at my desk.

My previous employer (which I lost my job from 2 years ago in a major downsizing) just cut thousands and thousands of jobs in the last few weeks. They were one of the big ones that the papers kept mentioning were cutting. I just had alot of friends lose jobs. Too many to count.

I don't know of anyone that has been laid off, but know of quite a few people who have had benefits cut and/or pay cut.

We laid off 42. No raises for Sr. Management. More to come (I assume).

I only know a few people who have been completely laid off, but I know a lot more who have been badly effected. One relative who owns her own business and revenue has been very very low. Another relative's sales commissions, which make up most of his income, are down by 75%. Many people where I work have not been offered as many hours as they wanted to get. They laid off 1 person where my spouse works, but we think his job is pretty secure.

My dh got laid off from a good paying designing job(auto related of course) in Nov. He as there over 8 years with not one day of lay off until that day!
Thank goodness he is healthy so the fact the next day they pulled the plug on his health insurance (how crappy)didn't ruin us b/c we can afford temporary coverage on our own.
WE saved so not in any dire straights nor will we be any time soon but no one else I know has too much saving or home equity.
Many many guys from his place got laid off and just a few remian so maybe 75 or so there? I only know a couple personally. My good freind's dh got laid off from his auto job too.
Not too many more people that I know, but EVERYWHERE I go such as out to eat everyone is talking about layoffs. lol.
I have friends in medical field and they are not laid off.

Well, the 15 of us in our department who got laid off, my cousin, my two brothers-in-law, best friend's wife - these are the ones I know the best. Other "friends of friends". Also, folks at my company who luckily didn't get laid off, but all got their hours cut.

We live in an area that had a lot of building (residental homes) going on. Now, no one we know has a job. It has affected the builders, framers, plumbers, electricians, masons, roofers, and everyone else involved in building.
