  • What's Been Your Worst Money Pit(s)?

Houses, properties, cars, campers, toys, hobbies, poor investments, a business, etc.?

I took a 50% loss on a camper used very little over an 18 month time frame.
Have had a couple very problematic boats that cost a lot of money and frustration.
Started then eventually closed a business that was barely profitable and was getting to be a major distraction from primary business.
Leased a new vehicle once. That was pretty stupid.

Nothing big fortunately. I probably kept one or two cars longer than it made financial sense so I put out a lot for repairs when it probably would have been better to replace them. I'm sure we've all had some bad investments though since any single stocks I've bought over the years have only been with "play" money so never more than about 1/2% of our portfolio and usually less. I can't think of anything else significant right now.

We've made some expensive choices, but "money pit" seems to imply maybe things which weren't worth the cost of ownership, all said and done. I can't say we've had those kinds of money pits.

Our motorhome is a good example. We use the heck out of it and have years of adventures and travels under our belts with it. It's an expensive way to travel, but the enjoyment factor is really high for us. Just because something is expensive or doesn't retain value doesn't mean it's a money pit.

I've put a lot of money into our cabin, but I view it as worth the cost.
We go there almost every weekend, sometimes for long weekends.
We're there almost as much as we are our primary residence

A few bad investments have cost a few thousand dollars at a time. I've spent more than I needed to on cars. But I wouldn't say that I've ever had any sort of money pit .... Unless you count kids & DW (all of whom I love!) who have fairly low impulse control.

I've spent more than I needed to on cars for sure. But again, it's not like I didn't enjoy them. It costs money to keep a car around whether you buy it and keep it, lease it, finance it. People? nah...as long as you love them, they're worth every penny.
