But are the lines between what makes one a "Democrat" or "Republican" that clear anymore?

One of the problems is it's not that simple anymore. For example there can be:

    1. a liberal {socially} and conservative {economically} Republican.
    2. a conservative {socially} and liberal {economically} Republican.
    3. a conservative {socially} and conservative {economically} Republican.
    4. a liberal {socially} and conservative {economically} Democrat.
    5. a conservative {socially} and liberal {economically} Democrat.
    6. a liberal {socially} and liberal {economically} Democrat.

That doesn't even consider other alternatives such as libertarians, etc.

I think this win by Donald Trump is a tale of how truly disenfranchised the average American feels. And on election day they expressed their dissatisfaction. Perhaps that Donald is crass, gross, crude, and has weird hair is exactly the point. Those who voted for him are saying "screw you" to the entire establishment. This they could not have done with the other 16 candidates (Bush, Rubio, Cruz, etc.) the Republican machine produced.

Trump's acceptance speech was a start, it was bipartisan and not offensive. His attitude toward Obama and the gravity of the presidency was humbling as well. I can get behind that.

He must fully denounce whole heartily that this country is not built bigotry, and those who thought Trump will make America white again can think again. McCain have done this, GWB have done this..so I see no reason why Trump isn't capable of doing this. Until this happens, I still can't fully think of Trump as my president.

I might not agree with his policies but that's okay going forward. I'm sure he means well and can probably help the middle class with his direction(since there's no definitive answer to this). I however, cannot accept all these closet racists coming out, spray painting derogatory remarks on people's cars and lockers, threatening non-white non-christians, and think this is the future of America.

Singuy, it is a shame that you can't post a response without racist hyperbole

News flash, you want to unite left and the right, Trump must do exactly what I said or else there's no hope. It's a shame all you post are just personal attacks and not trying to have a discussion. Perhaps you enjoy all the protest and eventually rioting on the streets. Or perhaps you could care less minorities are being harassed.

            @rennigade

Yes indeed! Here's a brief history:

He graduated from Eureka college in 1933 and became a radio announcer in 1932 for the Chicago Cubs.

He was contracted by Warner Brothers in 1937 and his first movie was Love Is on the Air. By the end of 1939 he had already appeared in 19 films. He participated in nearly 70 movies before entering into politics.

He also served in the military from 1937. He became active duty in 1942 and remained so until the end of WWII 1945.

He is said to have provided intelligence to the FBI on communist sympathizers in Hollywood in the 1940s.

He also did Television in the 1950s. He was part of 24 TV shows. The most famous was the show he hosted called General Electric Theater.

He started out as a Democrat but became a Republican in 1962. He was 51 years old when he switched from a Democrat to a Republican.

He was the 33rd Governor of California, from 1967 to 1975, after a career as a Hollywood actor and union leader.

Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States, from 1981 to 1989. He became the president during his first term at 69 years old. Although he was nearly 70 (69 and 11 months) years old at his inauguration on January 20, 1981.

After his 2nd term he did a lot of public speaking. In 1994 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He passed away June 5, 2004 at the age of 93.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the election. I've never considered having respect for others to be a political issue.

I do say Merry Christmas to those who I know celebrate Christmas.
I say Happy Chanukah to those who I know celebrate Chanukah.
To everyone else for whom I don't know what they celebrate, I say Happy Holidays.

I work with people of all races and religions. Saying Merry Christmas to all of them would be pretty rude of me.

And not all liberals are butt hurt about this. We celebrate Xmas as a cultural thing..both my wife and I are atheist.

I guess having respect for other people's culture is too politically correct.

I can't quite grasp that line of thinking.

I try to get to know people with whom I interact with regularly. For example, I have some patient's who are Jehovah's Witnesses. They do not celebrate birthdays, which I learned years ago the first time I wished one of them a happy birthday (their date of birth is always right in front of me on their chart). Well you don't have to tell me twice. I've never acknowledged any of their birthdays again. That's common courtesy as far as I'm concerned, not "political correctness".

Well, there are people who lives here are sick and tired of appeasing to others for their differences. Trump's America is all about the American Christian way or the highway. Go back to wherever you come from if you want to celebrate your culture so much.

Well if everyone whose family came here as immigrants leaves, the country is going to be awfully quiet - and I'm sure Trump will miss his wife. I won't be around to know since I'll be back in Eastern Europe and my wife will be in the Austria/Poland area.

                        -Sigh-

Stories of open racism across the country is heartbreaking. Many Americans are trying to do the right thing, but the hate is strong today.

Michigan middle school with children in the lunch room chanting "build the wall"
Mexican kids getting beaten in school.
Hijab being ripped off muslim women.
Writing "go back to China, TRUMP 2016" on a take out receipt
Burning of gay pride flags hanging on the side of the house
Blacks being called the N-word and telling them to sit in the back of the bus.
                        Hanging of black dolls
Spray painting African American cars with "Trump 2016" and "FU N--g--"
Writing "Black lives doesn't matter, and neither was your vote"

                        on the other side.

Some African Americans beat up a white man who voted for trump
                        Burning of American flags.

This doesn't have to be Trump America. Trump needs to make a speech and denounce these behaviors before it gets out of hand!

I am not personally attacking anyone. Just stating an observation which applies to this most recent post from you as well.

This post is a prime example of the hyperbole I was referring to.

Read this and you tell me if I was being hyperbolic
Hillary Clinton blasted Donald Trump for aligning with the "alt-right." But what exactly is the movement?

I was listening to NPR today and they did an interview with a youtube alt right supporter..and pretty much he said everything expressed in this article.

Add African American children chanting CRACKER at my daughter's soccer field last week. Witnessed it myself. The only kids using the N word were the African American kids. My daughter and her teammates were just there trying to focus on their practice.

So yes, there is racism in America and it is also directed at white people.

However, in my experience, there are far more people than ever before trying to unite against those that are not accepting of others. My niece is among the many white Americans attending protests.
