  • Who here knows NYC?

I have two layovers at LaGuardia in a few weeks. I specifically picked LGA for my airport so I would have a chance of seeing the city (at least from above).

How much does it cost to go from the airport to Manhattan? How much time does it take? I think my layovers are about 3.5 hrs/each... I hope that's enough to see the city. I've never been but would LOVE to see a few sites really quickly. I'm hoping maybe the Subway could get me downtown fast/cheap.

No traffic, a cab can get you from LGA to downtown Manhattan in 30 minutes. I would allow an hour each way as the tunnels and/or bridges can back up easily. So, with a 3 hour layover, I would not risk going into the city.

Oh, man. The Subway doesn't connect with the airport? There's no faster way?

I agree with Tom on timing. I'd definitely give it an hour each way.

Check out this page at TripAdvisor with options. There are a couple of ways to take a bus to a subway station, but any of the options will take 30-60 minutes.

Three hours is not enough time unfortunately.

I'm not overly familiar with NYC but it is the only place I have missed a flight due to traffic/logistics, and we had allowed a few hours to get to the airport.

I'd say a 3-hour layover is not long enough to see anything.

Even if you were in a normal city without crazy traffic like NYC, I hardly think 3.5 hours is enough time since you need to leave about an hour to hour and a half to get back through security, leaving you only 2 hours to get somewhere, see maybe one thing or have a meal and get back. Taxi is the quickest way to get to manhattan from LGA and it costs about $45 each way but as the others have said, an hour there, an hour back and an hour for security doesn't leave you enough time for even a drive through the city. Can you change your flight to have a one day stop over?

Alright guys, thanks for slapping some sense into me. I'll stay at the airport. Kinda bummed though.

Unfortunately, airports are generally located far from town for obvious reasons. That does make it frustrating when you have a layover and can't really do anything but wander around the airport. I've been a few places where I really wish I could have gone out and wandered - Chicago, London, etc. - but there wasn't enough time because I wasn't actually near anything worse seeing.
