Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there! We hope that you have a wonderful day filled with love, laughter, joy, and rest. Hopefully you’re not even worrying about your money today. But anytime that there’s a holiday, people might wonder what’s open and closed on that holiday. For example, you might find yourself wondering, “are banks open on Mother’s Day 2021?”
Mother’s Day Isn’t a Federal Holiday
Banks are closed on federal holidays. In fact, these holidays are also called bank holidays. Therefore, if Mother’s Day were a federal holiday, then chances are that banks would stay closed. Unfortunately, Mother’s Day is not a federal holiday.
Typically, there are ten federal holidays each year. In 2021, there happen to be 11, only because it includes New Year’s Day 2021 and New Year’s Day 2022. Federal holidays are observed on weekdays if they fall on weekends. Therefore, New Year’s Day 2022 is observed one day early this year.
In any case, Mother’s Day isn’t a federal holiday. Maybe it should be. Moms work super hard after all! But it’s not. Therefore, banks don’t close for Mother’s Day simply because it’s a holiday that many of us celebrate. But, that doesn’t necessarily mean that banks are open on Mother’s Day 2021.
Mother’s Day is a Sunday Holiday
Mother’s Day isn’t on a specific date of the year. It’s on a specific DAY of the year. It falls on the second Sunday of May. Therefore, the date might change from year to year but Mother’s Day is always on a Sunday. In 2021, Mother’s Day is on May 9th.
Although Mother’s Day isn’t a federal holiday, it’s a Sunday holiday. Therefore, banks likely won’t be open. Most banks simply don’t open on Sundays. There are exceptions, which we will get to in a moment. However, unless you happen to know that your bank is open on Sundays, chances are that your bank or credit union won’t be open on Mother’s Day because it’s not open on Sundays.
Short Answer: Are Banks Open on Mother’s Day 2021?
No, banks probably aren’t open on Mother’s Day 2021. Or on any other Mother’s Day for that matter. However, it’s not due to celebration of the holiday. Instead, it’s because Mother’s Day is on Sunday and banks usually aren’t open on Sundays.
Are Banks Open on May 10, 2021?
If Mother’s Day were a federal holiday, then banks would actually observe it on a weekday. As a result, banks would likely close on the Monday following Mother’s Day in observance of the holiday. However, since Mother’s Day is not a federal holiday, you don’t have to worry about that. Your bank should have normal hours on Monday, May 10, 2021.
Are Any Banks Open on Sundays? Will They Be Open on Mother’s Day?
There are some banks that do have limited hours on Sundays. In particular, bank branches located inside of supermarkets and large box stores may have Sunday hours. Note that these banks usually open around 10 or 11 am and close a few hours later. Therefore, you need to plan ahead to get your Sunday banking done.
Most banks that do offer Sunday hours will stay open on Mother’s Day. They don’t close that day just for the holiday. So, if you do need to get some banking done on Sunday, then you should look for one of these banks. American Savings Bank and TD Bank are two examples of banks that might have Sunday hours.
