  • Selling books--eBay vs. Amazon?

I've long been thinking about selling (or trying to sell) the tons of books I have. I've looked at the seller pages on both Amazon and eBay and here's my dilemma:

    Book selling for $10.

    Amazon fees: $3.84
eBay fees: $1.22 (plus PayPal fees)

Amazon has a lot going for it and I think people tend to trust it more. eBay is cheaper, but I've heard a lot of complaints from sellers, plus there's the whole designing your pages and stores and such.

If this seems workable--establishing my selling niche--I might branch out to looking for local books to sell for a small profit.

Anyone sell on either or both?

I sell a moderate number of books. I use half.com (which is owned by ebay). I've been happy with them. I have sold a couple on Amazon only because they were not in half.com's system.

If your book has quality content (high ratings) then amazon will promote the book for you (customers who bought ... bought also...) I don't have experience with ebay, so can not judge.

Why not try both? With different book titles?

you may also want to see if your local brick and mortar used book store buys books -- I purged a bunch of things off my bookshelf this weekend (who needs paper books anymore with a kindle ) and found that my local bookstore was pretty competitive in buybacks.

Maybe donate them and take a tax deduction?

You don't need a store to sell books on eBay. I have used both. If the book is in demand and selling fast, it will sell faster on eBay, IMO. With Half.com you can list and forget it until it sells...which is in some case is months, and months later.

I have not sold using Amazon, but seems like a decent place to try.

Amazon doesn't look as cheap as Ebay. if your books are worth a lot and also want a lot for them, then you should use Amazon.

Take Amazon out of the equation and just sell it directly on Ebay. This way you only get the 2 fees. 10% on eBay, 3-5-% for PayPal. This is one of my multiple revenue streams.
