so right now I work 6am to 2pm 5 days a week. There is a job here in town working 3pm to 11pm fours days a week. Is it worth the extra income to work 17 hours a day and get 5 hours of sleep?
Logging in...
is working 17 hours a day worth it

I strongly recommend you look at other options if you're in need of picking up some extra work. What you're proposing is to hold down two full-time jobs at the same time... it's simply not workable. Look for a PART-TIME job that will allow you to pick up an extra 4-5 hours of work in the afternoon/evening.

The OP said job #2 is four days a week, if your days off are spaced right it wouldn't be too bad. I only work at one job and I go in at 2 am and get off anywhere from 1pm until 7 pm depending on my work for the day so usually 2 to 4 days a week are 17 hour days for me. I hardly ever get more than 6 hours of sleep even on my days off I just wake up by 4 o'clock at the latest. You get used to it and I take a nap on my day off sometimes.

@skives - I think this is a very personal decision. Certainly there are people out there who would thrive on that kind of schedule with little sleep.
Certainly younger people (college students/parents) do it *all the time.*
I personally need a lot of sleep and highly value my sleep, so would not do that schedule. But I certainly know people who could easily work that kind of schedule and do well. Some people are just far more efficient sleepers. Sometime we become more efficient when forced to. If you can function well on 5 hours and make up sleep the rest of the week, is possible. I personally could not function at that level, but like I said, know people who can/do. Averages are averages, but everyone is a little different.

I've done work like that for years, off and on. And it depends....
Working multiple jobs for that many hours WILL affect your health and increase your stress level, although you don't notice it at first. It probably takes a few months, then it catches up to you. So if it's a short term thing, I'd say go for it.
I do think 60-70 hours on a normal schedule (not compacted into 5 days) is pretty doable on a long term basis if a portion of those hours is relatively low stress. I currently do a 40 hours/week day job, and perhaps another 25 hours with side business income, and am perfectly fine with it. I don't do things like watch tv or play video games any more, so instead I do work, which is far more satisfying to me than "keeping up with the kardashians" daily. If I'm not out having fun with friends, I'm working. If I'm not working, I'm having fun.

I BET TOO! You'll risk your health to that. Are you that in need of the money to desperately jump off? Sure thing is that, you'll be risking your health for over doing your energy and not having enough sleep. To rest our body is very much important. You might even find yourself spending more to save your life than the cost you will earn.

When I worked third shift, 10 hours a day for 4 days, that was really tough on me. So I know I probably couldn't keep up a schedule of 17 hours a day even for the extra income. I would be neglecting my kids and depriving myself of much needed sleep. However, I do know people who work schedules like that and they are hanging in there. It's really up to the person and how much they can handle without sacrificing the important stuff. If I didn't have anything else to do in my spare time, had no kids, needed the extra income BADLY, and could get a decent break (2 or 3 days off back to back), I could possibly work a schedule like that but I'm pretty sure my body would pay the price.
