DisneySteve, our stories are similar. I made a similar lifestyle change 10 years ago, when I left my stressful, time-consuming corporate gig, for home-based opportunities. Although I cut my overall earnings by doing this, it gave me time that I never had -- I was able to be there more for my kids, attending their sporting games, etc. It also forced me to become a bit of a budgeting maniac, since I was forced to cut expenses as much as possible, since I live in an expensive part of the country, and my healthcare costs have gone through the roof. Still, if I had to do it all over again, I would have done the same thing, only perhaps sooner. Money is VERY important, but you can never get time back.Originally posted by disneysteve View PostGreat question. I'd say the answer really depends on the situation. If you do not have enough money to meet your basic needs, you'd probably say money is more important. If, however, you have sufficient money to pay your bills and enjoy your life, you'd likely put more value on your time.
Years ago, I valued money more for the most part.
Today, I value time more. I made a lifestyle job change 11 years ago to a place with fewer hours, less on call time and no weekend hours. I took a substantial pay cut but I (and my family) am much happier and more relaxed.

Love money--NO. Like having enough money--Yes!
I've always been a bit weird in that to relax I will do arthmetic caluculations, run budgets and in the days that I still worked out I would try to calculate how I could cut back on something to be able to get out of working one day a month, so in that sense I was looking for time to do things that I wanted to do. I do love watching investments grow and multiply and better yet being able to leave an investment alone and not cash it in because we didn't earn enough or there was an emergency and we had to tap savings. Most people would look at our finances and would think maybe we didn't know much about handling money, but in reality because I DO know how to handle money we keep our heads above water when others would have drowned.

Money has value, but is not equatable to the value of family and love. Money pays bills and is thus important. However, true importance lies with the people you spend your time with. But I also love money and want more of it. I just don't want to spend anymore time trying to get it.
