Everybody know's there is a ton of opportunity on Craig's List to make money (unfortunately there are a lot of scams out there that you have to look out for). One thing that a good friend of mine used to do was check the "Free" listings on Craigslist every day for great opportunities to "re-sell". He had a truck so he'd pick up large items too, and one day he hit the mother-load, a company was going out of business was trying to get rid of 75 20" CRT monitors to anybody that would be able to pick them up.

Well a day later we had a living room full of this "crap", and unfortunately none of the monitors worked, but we found out a way to fix most of them with a $3 part. We actually sold the monitors for $50 to $150 each, and it was enough to pay the rent for three months.

I ever get a 386 IBM laptop from craigslist for free, still in my closet. It is truly a brick, but still working with DOS, not sure how much that worth:P

My friend made a living (for a while) doing that along with picking up stuff at garage sales and then using craigslist to sell it. It's an art form though. He had an eye for stuff I thought was junk. Worked very well for him though.

I love Craigslist to pick up cheap goods. I didn't want to pay for a gym membership because they are usually at least $20/month. I found a benchpress, bar, 255lbs of weights, triceps machine, and dumbells for only $160 total. Real bargains to be had there.

The secret to avoid scams is pretty simple - Deal with local folks only! That way you can go and pick up the goods/ the cash. That is the easiest way to make sure you are not getting taken for your money...

Really, compared to ebay, craigslist is a snap. You are going in person to purchase an item and paying cash. Either that or someone is coming to you in person to purchase something from you and paying cash. As long as you can make sure the item you are buying is what you think it is, you are all set.

Much easier to run scams on ebay where an item has to be shipped and payment is sent electronically.

                  * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
                  * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
                  * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

Hi Everyone, This is my first post but I have been "lurking" for a little while and I think this is a great site!
I felt the need to chime in on this topic since I have a bit experience on Craigslist...

I agree, if you have stuff to sell (especially large items that would be expensive to ship) CL is a great option compared to eBay. Cash transaction, local pick up and the deal is done. I've also seen eBay get much more difficult for the "little guy" to do any sort of decent business long term. Yes, anyone can sell some stuff in there house on ebay and make some money, but they've made it harder to conduct a successful business if you're not already established.

Craigslist has become stricter over the years, but I think in the long run its probably for the best.

Cash is king, so Craigslist is safer anyway you look at it.

                    JMHO

Craigslist actually has good info about this on the site I tried to post a direct link but this site wont let me.Just go to craigslist click the category your looking for and at the top of the page under the search bar and above the listings there is a link that says avoiding scams and fraud read that and follow the advice and you should be good to go.The main thing is dealing locally. Also if your buying something like say electronics test it out first. A friend of mine bought a dead xbox on craigslist and couldn't track down the guy he got it from since they had met at a local business and the guy wouldn't answer my friends calls after. His experience is not typical but its an example of the kind of precautions you should take in any deal on used items. Good luck to you craigslist has been a huge help to me in so many ways. I found my job,my car, my lost dog,my new kitten, and ton of great deals on items I needed on craigslist.I have made a lot of money on craigslist selling things, and gotten lots of useful things bartering services or items on craigslist.

Not only do I buy inexpensive items on Craigslist from my local area. I also find focus groups and some jobs that last for a while with good wages.
