  • How much in I bonds

Is there a point where it doesn't make sense to keep laddering i bonds? I have 5 years or $50k each for DH and I. I also just set aside $20k for next January purchase. My laziness is that I contribute once a year to Roth and now once a year to I bonds. I don't have much in bonds in our accounts. But we do tend to have a bit of cash instead. In theory this is our EF which is I guess around 10 months. We currently have in our savings account $20k at any given time.

Am i getting excessive? What would be the trade off to continually fund i bonds annually $20k? Building a i bond ladder? We are adding to our stock mix as well. But should i be redirecting it to stocks?

Given that they're more accessible than most comparable assets (CDs, treasuries, etc.), I'm not even sure I'd call it a laddered setup (once you get past the 1-yr holding period). So amassing an increasing amount of I-Bonds would not be much of a concern. Add to that the inflation protection, and it's really more a store of value than anything else. As long as these bonds don't become an over-weighted portion of your portfolio (not a concern at $20k/yr, knowing that you also have many other assets & getting more), there's nothing wrong with continuing to build up your collection of I-Bonds. Just keep an eye on what they're earning, and be ready to move away from them if/when inflation eventually drops again. At that point, other options may provide better returns. But there's nothing that forces you to do anything, because you can keep the I-Bonds for 30+ years.
