Based on what many of the "experts" are saying, you should reach that within the next few trading days then it will dip below again with the predicted pull back.

I am hoping the Dow closes above 20,000 today and trades down tomorrow when my direct deposit hits the account.

Earlier this month we surpassed the $700k milestone for our retirement accounts.

Just wondering how long ago or on what age you guys started investing in 401k or roth ira? did you have to max out every year or just put as much to get the match from your employer. what is the average yearly return you got. its always great to see quarter million or half million in our retirement account. Congrats to all you guys you have reached the milestone.

If you dont mind sharing such details, I am sure that would help others on this forum.

I started investing in 401k when I first started working a job that offered 401k...that was in 2007. Im not 100% sure if I maxed my first year...I cant even remember...but I did start maxing in 2008 till present.

Im 33, started investing in 401k around 26/27. I only have data from 2013...when I started tracking everything.

I have an old 401k I never rolled over...its still from an old employee. Its split between a global stock fund and a large stock index fund. Not sure why I cant find the ticker for these...I should prob roll them over to my "rollover account." My rollover and current 401k are invested 100% in FSTVX (fidelity total market.)

              These are the returns..

              2013
              FSTVX - 21%
              Old 401K - 31%

              2014
              FSTVX - 11%
              Old 401k - 8%

              2015
              FSTVX - -2.5%
              Old 401k - .01% (made $4, lol)

              2016
              FSTVX - 12.5%
              Old 401k - 10.5%

              Those 4 years...FSTVX averaged 10% returns...old 401k around 12% returns.

As of right now, we just crossed the $350,000 line for our retirement plans. I'm sure it will dip lower from the looks of the stock market today, but at least the account with the most amount of money was cashed out during a spike. We just got the check today and are in the process of transferring it to his main retirement account. I will be so happy when it is done.

I also raised our contributions to 8% today. I raised it to 7% last month and wanted to be sure how much the paycheck would be before doing anything more. I'm on track to hit our conservative goal of 10% this year. I can't plan on maxing out until we get our house situation settled.

No prob. Just an fyi...im 100% in fstvx because I have a while yet before I want to retire. When I reach 40 I plan on re-balancing. I can ride the ups and downs. I dont know what your age is so take my advice as a grain of salt.

Ahh, the salad years after a recession. I would recommend you look at a proper asset allocation for your risk tolerance. And 100% equity has proven to underperform an 80/20 allocation over the many bulls and bears. No chance to rebalance if you're 100% stock.

Yeah I wish I would have started tracking in 2007 when I started. I can only provide what I have but yes...those years are not the norm. 2015 was completely flat so that gives a little snapshot of what could happen.

Do you have any links or more info that supports the 80/20 allocation? I dont understand why i would want 20% bonds at my age...but I am interested if that outperforms 100% equity. I have 20 years to go before I want to get out.

Heres some data from vanguard with different portfolio allocations from 1926 - 2015. It appears that 100% stocks outperform any other unless im reading this wrong? I wouldnt recommend 100% stocks to anyone looking at retirement in the near future...but someone with 2 decades to go (and hopefully 3 decades before I have to touch 401k)...not sure what the issue is?

How old are you guys? Whats your approx AA?

Did we ever have a thread for asset allocation and age...and approx time frame when someone wants to retire? Would be curious to see where everyone stands.
