I lose my COBRA Jan 1 and am looking at the NYS Marketplace plans (this year's, the new ones aren't out yet). I got sick 2 yrs ago and I am a heavy user of my health insurance, i.e.: I had 76 MD appts last year and tons of meds, this year I'll have had 3 surgeries. I have an excellent team of doctors who work well together and it took a long time to get this in place. Next year, the only way to keep my team of MDs is to use the same insurance company I am using now. They are not cheap.
They have platinum, gold and bronze plans. The platinum plan costs the same as my Cobra, roughly $600 a month but there is no deductible and you just pay co-pays and a set amt for meds right out of the box. The bronze plan is $400 a month and you have to pay $4500 up front before any insurance kicks in, they only pay 50% of drug costs, and only 50% of hospital stays.
Even though I only make $24,500 on disability, I think I should go with the platinum plan, right? I couldn't afford to pay 50% of a hospitalization on the bronze plan, plus 15% of all MD visits, tests, labs, equipment, etc. The bronze plan sounds to me to be appropriate for someone who barely uses their health insurance. That is definitely not me.
Do I sound like I am on the right track? I also have 13k in an emergency fund designated towards healthcare. and in March of 2017, I qualify for Medicare so the high premiums are only for 15 months.
