    Tax payments must be postmarked on or before the cutoff date (15 July) to not be penalized. By waiting to the last second, you basically get your check at the end of the line to get processed/cashed, letting you hold the money in your accounts longer.

    Personally, I just always pay anything owed immediately... One less thing for me to remember

      I do the same. I pay when I file. Now if I owed a large amount, like what corn posted, I'd probably hold off because then the interest float could be meaningful. But when I owe a few hundred or even a thousand or two, I'd rather just get it done.
