We have a mortgage payment which takes about half of our income.

wow. You are definitely living the $12k/year frugal. Is it something you wish to increase eventually or do you think it's sustainable forever?

Of course, I wish our income to go up. We do a lot of work to be able to live on that little. We have about 12 years left on our mortgage, then the kids will be old enough, so then I could work too, and maybe downsize. It should get better once the house is paid off.
