  • teacher gift giving

Strangely enough I am room parent to both kids rooms this year. I don't know how it happened but it did. Interesting thing. We are out for the rest of the year and not going back to school. School ends in June. We have a ton of room money for both rooms talking like $700 we collected from parents and didn't spend on parties. May 5-10th or something is teacher appreciation week. Well I'm leaning to just giving teacher gift cards with the rest of the money.

Last week I gave $100 to teachers paying teachers website (it's for lesson plans) to one teacher that the other 2nd grade room co-parent with me suggested and we emailed the class. The other teacher we gave her a mobile desk she asked for from remote learning about $110, this 4th grade co-room parent is not a teacher. So the 4th grade parent suggested we could return the money or spend it on the end of the year party. The 2nd grade room parent said give it to the teacher.

Now what do you guys think? FWIW, I am leaning to giving it to the teachers and if we want an end of year party the parents chip in to host. This money was gather by class parents who wanted to "donate" to room parties, teacher gifts, etc. It was $40/per kid if you wanted to and it wasn't required. Many parents did donate, and some more and some none. So the expectation was never to get it back.

Strange times we live in. Normally we'd use it up teacher appreciation week and the rest would go to the teacher end of the year present.

It's probably too soon to know if having an end of year party is feasible so it's hard to say that you should set money aside for that.

Otherwise, the money was intended for teacher gifts, right? If so, than that's where it should go.

The other option is to survey/poll the parents who put up the money. Ask if they want it back or want it to go to the teachers.

I'd poll the parents. I honestly wouldn't offer it back to parents, but find a few good options for how it could be used to benefit the teacher & classroom (per the original intent of the money).
