For a long time I've helped my brother complete his tax return.
He stopped working in 2018.
For 2019 (and probably for the rest of his life), he is not required to file a tax return. I've verified that he does not need to file on the IRS web site (see link).
Do any of you have experience with this (moving from filing a tax return to no longer needing to file)? What happens? Does the IRS contact you and ask you why? Or do they just figure it out when there is no longer a W-2 filed with your information?
It just feels a little weird to me to stop filing and not send some sort of letter to the IRS or file a return that is marked "FINAL" or something like that ...
