  • Question About No Longer Needing To File A Tax Return

For a long time I've helped my brother complete his tax return.
    He stopped working in 2018.
For 2019 (and probably for the rest of his life), he is not required to file a tax return. I've verified that he does not need to file on the IRS web site (see link).

Do any of you have experience with this (moving from filing a tax return to no longer needing to file)? What happens? Does the IRS contact you and ask you why? Or do they just figure it out when there is no longer a W-2 filed with your information?

It just feels a little weird to me to stop filing and not send some sort of letter to the IRS or file a return that is marked "FINAL" or something like that ...

It's not necessary to notify the IRS. You file a return when you need to and don't when you don't need to. As you said, they won't be getting any W-2 that won't be matched to a return so there will be no discrepancy on their end.

      related to your question:

I just did my local tax return.

it said that everyone has to file even if they do not have income.

      I am in PA.

Great point. I looked at the state Dept of Revenue site and he does not have to file in the state either.

Great point to be aware of.

I have that issue with my Sales Tax license. I no longer do any taxable sales because eBay now collects and files state sales tax for you but I still have to file a return every quarter to report I owe nothing. I asked my accountant about this and he said there's no way to stop that unless I formally close the business and surrender the tax license which I don't really want to do at this point.

Yeah. In PA we need to file a PA state tax return and a local tax return (county).

So with federal there are 3 tax returns I need to complete.

not sure how it is in other states.

If you are not require to fill in Federal or state, you just do not file. They have determined the threshold that will not owe taxes and thus sending anything in is just a waste of time for them to process, and for you to file. Obviously, one would want to file if some sort of withholding had taken place that one would want refunded. But that is usually the case where they tell you to file.

Great point, and not something I had thought about. Thanks.
