  • Monte Carlo Simulation for Retirement Planning

I am trying to integrate Monte Carlo simulations into my retirement planning. I decided to use OnTrajectory for this but I am sure that there are other websites out there. I also use a traditional excel spreadsheet.

Is anyone out there performing Monte Carlo Simulations on their financial projections? It would be great if you could share your experiences. Any successful integration of MC to personal financial planning? Thanks in advance!

These are the two I use:

I like the Flexible Retirement Planner one the best as it has the most flexibility. Tom

I downloaded the offline version and use that.

I think Seek_FIRE's suggestion (ontrajectory) is more of a 2015 solution. I can't find anything comparable. The other tools got stuck in the 90's....

Great topic here that seek_fire started...at least it got me to reflect once again on the relevance of simulations such as Monte Carlo in financial planning. I have used a handful of tools in the past to perform simulations such as Fire calc, cFiresim (based on fire calc), etc. But I just checked out ontrajectory and am pretty impressed with what they've done in terms of simulations - Monte Carlo, historical and others

I gave ontrajectory a look. The free version is too basic. Not sure what the paid version costs, but I'm not going to try it. Tom

Thanks for the replies. TomHole, I tried out your suggestions but I think I will stick with OnTrajectory for now. The other comments were spot on. OT is so much more advanced and easy to use. It has really helped keep me on track. TH, Why are you so high on the other tools? Maybe there is something that I am not seeing????

Hey I'm looking for a good retirement planner too and I found this recent thread and checked out every program mentioned.

Flexible retirement planner looks old -- I prefer to use something that's on a cloud so I can access it from my home PC, my laptop, and at work. And at work, I definitely can't download anything, so this one was a no go for me

FireCalc is sort of confusing...I tried to input my data and was not getting the results I was looking for. Looks pretty outdated and I couldn't even create an account to save my data.

OnTrajectory, however, was really easy for me to start my account and everything is saved on a cloud so that's another big plus. OnTrajectory.com didn't seem basic to me at all...There are a lot of features including the monte carlo analysis. There is no paid version yet so the free version right now has all of the paid features so it looks pretty good for me so far! Thanks for the info on the calculators guys - OnTrajectory could be a keeper!
