  • I had a bit of a bike crash this morning...

While riding into work today, I was hit by a car.

Before you gasp, it wasn't bad at all. I was riding the sidewalk as it met with an intersection. The guy didn't stop at the stop sign and instead pulled way up past it to wait for traffic. That blocked the bike path while I was riding through. I smacked his fender and went over the hood. He looked shocked and then looking like 'who gives a fu<k' and drove off. I don't have his license plate or anything. Bike is okay as well and I really don't feel hurt at all.

Is there anything I should do now?

EDIT: I guess I hit the car.. sounds stupid to say that.

Sounds like you're unhurt, which is good. Go get checked out by a doc if you think you need to.

You might think about filing a police report. The way you describe it, I'm not sure who's fault it actually was, like if he pulled out in front of you, or if he was already stopped in the path of travel and was there to be seen. At the very least, you should document the incident.

At the very least, it's required that both drivers stop, so it sounds like he left the scene without exchanging any information. If he comes forward, it might be easier to link you guys up if there's already a police report on file.

Other than that, brush it off, you're lucky to be alive...if you were a cat, I'd say you probably deducted one of your nine lives!
    History will judge the complicit.

Oh, so sorry that happened. What a cold, gutless person to just drive away.

Years ago, while biking to work, my husband was hit from the side by a car at an intersection. He says he saw the driver look in his direction, but apparently failed to see him. He, too went over the hood and hit the windshield. There was enough force to break the glass. My DH says the driver cussed him out for "what you did!" and drove away. Bike was damaged enough that he walked it back home (probably just over a mile) and got a car ride to work. Funny, I don't remember him having any bruises, so maybe the bike and the windshield dissipated most of the energy.

Glad to hear you're okay. Be prepared to be sore tomorrow, though. If there's no health issues, I'd suggest taking an anti-inflammatory tonight like ibuprofen. And ice anything that did get banged up.

I feel like this is one big reason why bicyclists are generally hated by the cagers of the world... in most cases the kinds of things are caused by driver carelessness and when something happens its the "damn bicyclists" fault. What a POS thing to do driving away like that. I hate to think that people in general are this ****ty. Glad youre ok though.

Are you still doing okay? If you were at fault, there's not much to do in my opinion. If you damaged their car and they drove off then it is their loss. You could still contact police in case that person contacted them about the accident.

I would still make a police report in case anything else happens down the road health-wise. If you end up seeing a doctor, you'll probably be filling out a form about whether it was an accident or not. And if it was, doesn't your insurance get flaky about who is responsible for paying, you or the other guy? Hmmm, maybe it's best to not be totally truthful about what happened, lol.

Consider that a blessing. In the words of Samuel L. Jackson on Jurassic Park:

"It could've been worse, John....it could've been a LOT worse."

Be careful on your bike! No air bags.
