  • Credit Card Strategy

    Hey Everyone,

I have a couple of credit cards that I use and I was thinking about getting one for travel/hotels, but I'm not sure if I should get one or if I should just stick with the current cards I have.

    I have the following Cards:

American Express: 6% Groceries, 3% Gas, 3% Department stores, 1% Everything Else
    Citi Double Cash: 2% Everything
Discover IT Card: 5% Revolving categories.

I would only be using the travel card on flights and/or hotels. I only fly 3 times or less a year, so I'm not sure if it is worth to get a card with a fee OR if it is worth to get a separate card at all.

Is there a travel card I should look into or any other card I should look into besides the ones I mentioned above?

I decided that the best travel rewards credit card for me is Chase Sapphire Preferred. It has one of the largest SignUp bonuses in the industry as well as great long-term rewards for travel and dining. The number of ways you can redeem points, including transferring at equal value to many partners is simply unmatched by any card. This card remains my go to travel credit card again this year.

Woh, thanks for the great tip with the Discover IT. 10% on Amazon and department stores (next months category). Awesome. I will make sure to take advantage of that.

As far opening new cards, I do not change my spending habits, I just chose to pay with different cards.

My only concern with the travel cards is that I do not know if I would use them enough or travel enough in order to at least "break even". I recently found that my Upromise card has around 5%-7% off Priceline and other sites like that. Like I said in my post I only travel 3 times or less a year, which is why I am concerned that I would break even with the annual fee.

Its really depends on your spending frequency.

If you travel internationally, you need a credit card that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee. I use the BofA Travel Rewards Visa card for this. No fee plus it still pays a cash reward.
