  • Goals for 2015

Has anyone thought about their goals for the next year? What are some of yours?

I am still trying to decide what is most important for me.

Here are the current ideas for mine:
    1. $1,000 in Animal Fund (rollover from this year)
    2. $4,500 in EF (rollover from this year)
    3. $2,500 to Roth IRA
    4. Pay off $5,000 LOC
    5. $1,000 Car Savings

I'm not going to meet my goals for this year, and am feeling a little discouraged. But life happens. Still going to think big for next year.

I think its ok that you didn't make your goals for this year as long as you tried. Surely you made some progress that is worth celebrating? I too am pondering goals for 2015. Like you an EF is important, but I'm still stuck on how much I need because I don't really know what my expenses are. All things to work on =)

Try not to get too discouraged, but look at what you did accomplish financially that was in the positive. Then consider why you didn't meet the goals, was it something unexpected and out of your control or was it simply that you changed your priorities?

When you make goals try to break them down by paycheck and deadline. If you need $1000 by June 1 to purchase car, then you will need to save $200 each month to meet the goal. When you do this for all goals and then add up what you need to save each month, you need to know if it fits in with what you are even able to save or accomplish, especially without being too tight!

I've started to think about 2015 goals and expect to have them fined tuned before the January 1 paycheck. Our goals will include college, retirement and more emergency fund cash.

Things popped up that were out of my control this year.

I had to spend $3,600 to get a new car and new tires.

I am short of my goals this year by about $3,000. So if you look at it that way, I would have easily completed my goals if life hadn't thrown a curve ball at me.

This year I didn't really break them down by deadlines or monthly. For next year I have written each one out, with deadlines throughout the year. So goals within goals. I think that will help me stay more on track.

See? You actually did pretty good considering the unexpected vehicle!
The only way I could make the mortgage pay down goal we had this year was to know approximately how much principal would be paid with each payment, how much extra we could afford to send from paychecks and the knowledge that I could likely 'earn' $4K+ in extra money (snowflakes) in a years time.

The tracking of progress along the way, and blogging about it help keep me accountable.

My financial goals for 2015 are:
              • Get Life Insurance
              • Reduce total yearly spending by 8%
              • Increase emergency fund from 3.5 months expenses to 6 months expenses
              • Maximize all tax advantaged accounts
              • Put excess cash flow into taxable brokerage account, probably a small cap index fund to add a little diversity to my S&P fund
              • My stretch goal is to achieve a 50% savings rate

Pretty much same as last year. Max 401k, max roth. I do want to take around $10k throughout the year out of savings account and move toward some of my existing index funds and mutual funds. Thats about it.

Fund 6 months of full expenses (job loss account)
Fund EF (non job related emergency fund)
Fund house repair account (non emergency repairs)
Fund 1 year of college (college starts in 2016)
Fund new car fund (don't need a new car in the near future, but nice to have the option)
                      Max 401k and IRA
Save all of my pension (this is a challenge)

I have the 2015 budget laid out and it looks like all of this is possible.

                        Goals

1-Max out tax advantaged accounts, only got 30% in this year, but I got a raise so this is a realistic goal.
                        2-Max Roth IRA
3-Start a car fund, seeing many people mention it here and realize I have a 12 year old truck, this seems like a prudent idea
4-Start an after tax investment account. Seeing a 10 month EF sitting in a bank account earning minimal interest seems like a waste

Make sure I've got all my ducks in a row for retirement in 2016.

Not sure yet, because don't know what my income will be next year. I am hoping to achieve these goals:

                            1. Max out IRAs
                            2. Save $5k (home maintenance/car replacement)
                            3. Invest $3k (taxable investments, for retirement or college)
                            4. Extra $3k to mortgage

                            Pretty much "the usual".
