  • First college tuition payment made!

A momentous day in our household. A few minutes ago, I made the first tuition payment for our daughter who enters college one month from today. I made a withdrawal from the 529 plan about 2 weeks ago, deposited that check when it came, and charged the tuition bill to our Marriott Visa tonight. I'll pay it off in a day or two.

So at least there is a little perk from spending all of that money - I'll rack up some free hotel stays.

    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?

Excellent! And better than paying a student loan.

      Another savingadvice kid grows up.

Mine was in his last spring before college when I started posting here. Unfortunately I did not get any credit card bonuses by paying his tuition....'cause he did me proud and went to college tuition free.

I remember back when you were planning your daughte's Bat Mitzvah.

College tuition checks were the 2nd largest checks I EVER wrot. The lzargest was the downpayment (30%) on my current house in 1977.

I forget how long I've been here. DD was 10 when I joined this site - wow! Now she's nearly 19 and leaves for college at the end of the month.

I'd gladly sacrifice the reward points for a free ride. I think you got the better deal there Joan.

Congrats.. Good to know I just opened one for my daughter. Wish it would have been sooner but it better than not doing it at all.

I would have liked to have opened it sooner too, but I was busy paying off my own college education.

Still, we managed to accumulate 60K. That won't cover everything but it will certainly help.

We just had a little surprise, we've been putting our 3 kids college costs on our Costco American Express card for years and paying it off in full for the rewards but the other day we paid for the fall semester for our daughter and found that the college now charges a credit card fee, $94.00 to be exact!

It was nice while it lasted, luckily she's a senior and our last kid in college. Make sure you send them off to college with a credit card from your account, college book store charges add up quickly and don't charge a credit card fee.

Congratulations to daughter, who will be taking a big step forward. As parents you will need to adjust to Empty Nest Syndrome. We had DSs take responsibility for all their university costs. We thought it would be an opportunity to make mistakes and find solutions to problems. Instead it meant lots of phone calls at weird hours [they were in a different time zone] or texts which are sometimes so abbreviated they're hard to decipher. We learned a new 'language.'
