  • Sallie Mae is fraudulent! They mis-allocated my extra payment of 1000 dollars!

I am trying to pay off my Sallie Mae loan. I have two loans with them, one for about 5k and another for about 7k. I mailed in a a check for 1000 dollars (in excess of my monthly payment). I wrote explicit instructions on the check as well as a hand written signed note. Stating "apply to principal only" "apply this 1000 dollars to principal only of loan 1-01"

The check was cashed so I checked my sallie mae online account today and they did not apply the money correctly! They applied half the money to the principal of one loans and half the money to the principal of the other loan. Each of these loans has a 6.55 percent interest rate. I am SO pissed! I am specifically aiming to pay off the smaller one first and then pay off the larger one. They blatantly applied my hard earned money anyway they wanted to and to their advantage with no regard for my very specific instructions. I feel so hopeless and as if I have no recourse or agency. I worked so hard to send that extra money and they literally did what they wanted to do with MY money.

I guess there is no question here, but does anyone have an advice? next steps? recourse? suggestions?

Did you try calling them? I had a federal loan payment mis-applied once, and I just called them and they fixed it.

I am going to call them in the morning but from what I have been reading online they do this often and do not correct it even if you call. I will try calling and follow up on this thread but the thought of them not correcting it is making me very angry!

Technically, it's their money. You borrowed it. Now you're paying it back.

Calmly call them and ask nicely if they can distribute the payment how you originally wanted it to be.

Is there no way to pay these things online? Mailing a check in with hand-written instructions seems so... archaic.
        History will judge the complicit.

Just call them and they should fix it. I called them just the other day to find out if I could tell them which loan I wanted mu UPromise money sent to, and they said no, but that once it is applied, if it's not to the loan I wanted just call them and they would apply it to the loan I wanted.
