I have traveled a lot internationally and the advice you are getting is good.

Wherever you go travel like the locals do: us busses and subway. Don't rent a car, very expensive and your age will impact your rates.

Don't eat out at restaurants. Buy quick things from grocery stores: yogurt, fruit, rolls or bread, cheese, meats, pb and j, and use each day as an adventure.

Plan your trip now for a year from now. Watch airfare, heck track it on a spreadsheet so you know the ebbs and flows of where you want to go. Read travel websites to learn where you are going: Rick steves has tons of info and has an area for travelers to post questions and responses.

If visiting family, stay with them. Buy a train ticket, pack light and go!

I've stayed at hostels in many countries and never had a problem as long as I thought smart. Don't travel with valuables, lock your back pack closed and to something, many provide breakfast, many also provide simple dinners and for only 25-30 a night. Go and enjoy but do it smartly, research, watch dares, read about where you are going and go!

Or book tickets last minute and go wherever is cheap. Done this for both Europe and Asia. When a deal is to be had take the opportunity. Book overnight Trains in Europe to save on hostels. Again depends on country some are nice and some are sketchy.
