Your employer may be a citizen, but it is illegal to pay employees cash under the table. He is doing this to avoid paying payroll taxes, worker's compensation insurance, unemployment taxes, etc., all of which is very illegal.

You may need two jobs to make more money, You get extra money if you work more than 40 hours at one job. New York is one of the mot expensive cities in America. Many cities are cheaper for rent-a-room, food and transportation.
