  • Trying to Move

How much do you guys budget for moving? Selling a home, relocating, etc? We are hopefully and started getting interviews/calls. We've been planning this for a year and have been saving money and paid off debt but also gotten debt, specifically a car.

We owe $19k on a car @ 2.9% we bought last year. It is bugging me but I know we shouldn't pay it off, until after we sell our place and move.

But is there a number people would keep on saving? We have our 6 month EF $30k, but we have some stock vesting and about $15k extra coming in from that or more. I am tempted to try to pull the trigger. Tell me how crazy this would be? Stupid? Better off? My DH doesn't want to pay anything and wants to keep as much cash as possible. The car loan keeps bothering me. Would you guys keep the cash?

We are not upside down on our house and refinanced last year so we owe less and we did pay off a bit more at that time. So we're good on selling the house.

My gut reaction would be to keep the cash on hand until after the move. A lot of unexpected costs can creep up when you are moving. Plus it shouldn't be too long til you are settled and know exactly where you stand.

Are you waiting to move until after you sell the house? If so, your house might be on the market awhile before you sell. See what the average time on the market in your area is, that might help you decide. If you are going to be there for another 6 months, then maybe go ahead and pay it off now. You will have time to save up some extra cash in the meantime.

yeah I would keep as much cash as you can prior to your move. You never know what surmounting costs can occur prior, during and after your move.

I would keep the cash handy. I did a move about a year ago, just me, and it cost about $6000.

Nope we'd move and try to sell the house, even if it meant cutting the price.
