  • thinking of cutting cable but want internet

Well, it has been a few months since my last cable rant, and in a short while the 6 month triple play Comcrap deal will expire and our tv/internet/phone will go from $170 a month to $190. Considering the only shows that seem to be on now are CSI: Nebraska and Two men and a fifth, I don't think we would really miss cable. We actually watch a lot of streaming Netflix (the British shows are pretty decent) and can capture most network shows via website. This means we need pretty fast internet. My stock trading would also be somewhat crimped without internet, so I think it is a must.

Do any of you have internet only, and if so, who do you have it through and how do you like it? I can do without a phone...my prepaid cell phone minutes usually expire each year with 300 or so left (use a Nexus One smartphone with a t-mobile $50 prepaid 400 minute card...$50 a year beats having a 2 year contract!)

I use internet only, through Mediacom cable. Although I need to get them to lower the price, since the promo ended 6 months ago. Roommates and I don't really watch TV, or have them hooked to the lines. Then again I stream the 2-3 shows I watch regularly, from my workstation to PS3s we have, similiar to DVRs. Hulu, youtube, torrent sites are always other options. I still keep my personal cell from AT&T (no more contract) along with work cell.
High speed internet is a must for me, not just for work, but my main source of info. Even if you have internet only package,, you're still to have access to the local cable channels, since its fed off the same line to your house. The only difference between basic basic plan and upgrading is the filter attached at your box outside which is programmed to your account/address. So you can still get the basic channels, which is only a few, without having to use an antenna.
"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Basic TV channels plus Cable Internet is one option. DSL from a company like Earthlink, Speakeasy or DSL Extreme is another option.

I've seen intro rates on DSL as low as $12.95 per month. This service will not compare well to cable speeds. Expect to pay about three times that for DSL with speeds similar to cable, if they're even available in your area.

Yes, the best price I seem to be able to obtain for Comcast 12Mbit download rate (which is about the minimum I would want for streaming Netflix) is $57.95 + $7 modem rental. We currently pay about $165 for phone/premium HD/15Mbit internet. So $1200 a year cheaper to go with internet only...hmmm...

There is some case to be made that in addition to the $1200 savings, it might get us off the couch a bit more...perhaps start to sell some of those 4,000 lego sets on ebay or something...

We cancelled cable in August and pay $50/month for internet through Clearview/Optimum. I don't miss cable at all and I REALLY don't miss the big monthly bill. We use Netflix, hulu and I've been hitting the library for old tv series dvds. We are currently watching Alias. Next will be Friends.

I have internet only through Comcast. It's the bottom of the line package for $41 a month I think. We get a handful of local channels with it - no options otherwise. It works just fine for streaming video online, even with multiple computers online.

Moving to a new apartment out of my parents house in about 1 week. I don't plan to get any TV whatsoever. I'll probably put a cheap antenna on it for local news channels, and since I have a PS3 to play video games, I'm getting Netflix and Hulu+. Those applications can be downloaded directly to the PS3 and combined only cost me $20/month.

AT&T does have a deal with new customers, that I can get a 3MB/S download speed Internet for only $15 for 12 months (12 month contract). However, I'm not sure if that will be good enough to stream Netflix/Hulu. I will be the only person in the apartment, but I think I would rather have around 6MB/S

We have dry-loop (no phone service) DSL through Frontier (was Verizon until last summer). Costs $30/month. We get our TV over the air. Vonage for phone service.

                We like it just fine.
