  • Predict the cost of future utility bills

I have kept track of my utility bills statements for approx. 2 years and over the last year I have tried to take advantage of this. I am now saving on my utility bills, in that I know which months I get hit the hardest (ie - heat for the winter, air conditioning for summer). It has help tremendously for budgeting. I can almost predict the cost before the month begins, and if it is less, all the better.

Does anyone save utility bill statements from years past to figure future cost?

I have tracked off and on since we bought our house in 02- mostly on. I think the most helpful aspect of this is to make sure something hasn't suddenly gone awry- like if you suddenly start using excessive amounts of water or such.

In recent times, with utility costs rising quickly, I find it harder and harder to predict month to month bills. For many years, I knew that in Feb, we'd have a heat bill around $130. This coming Feb, we will cut back as much as we can and anticipate a $260 from the rumors I've been hearing. It probably sounds very uneducated, but I've just been overestimating costs in recent times and hoping for the best.

I have all bills since we started. I have electronic copies of every bill for 7 years. Scanned and downloaded.

But I do balanced billing because our heating costs are outrageous in the winter.
