    What a funny topic.

After 9/11 I kept a nice chunk of cash in my freezer in case I had to leave the city and the ATMs were out of cash. It seems like a stupid thing to do now but I felt very relieved knowing I had a cash nest egg at hand.

        LOL.

Seriously though, tricks like this (and the fake shaving cream cans, etc.) are a good way to get your valuables accidentally thrown away or forgotten. Like I've said in the past, the risk of accidental loss is probably higher than risk of theft.

I think that if you do this that you should put this information on a list in your safe deposit box so someone will know. I'm trying to think how this would play out with someone who develops alzheimer's. The loss could happen while you're still living.

            security system at home
            money in the bank

            next question?

If I have a need for large amounts of cash, it is left at home. The security system would go off and within 60 seconds call the police. It would take 60 seconds to find where we keep it (wife and I use same location).

I would look into investing it or maybe using a credit union. Banks are always looking to take your money.

why don't you just try and get another bank account, was it your choice not to have a bank account anymore?
Besides the risks of theft, fire etc, you would also loose out on the other benefits of having a bank account such as earning interest on the money!

My grandfather was good at this. late in their retirement they had to get a new car. Grampa went through the house and came up with enough cash he had stashed over the years to buy it!!!!! I wasn't there when they packed the house up, but I'm certain they were hunting for hidden loot!!!

Personally...I'd turn it into gold coins (that will at least keep up with inflation) and then put it in a safety deposit box at the bank. This is for longer term savings.

Now if you just want to work on a cash baises and need your weekly expenses and all that....you can get good safes and bolt them to the floor. Make sure you get ones that could handle a house fire.
