  • Making Side Money

Okay, I know the internet has a billion different "get-rich-quick", make money online, real estate magic, MLM, online, etc. business ideas online.

But, anyone do something on the side to make any money and actually have it be worthwhile?

The reason I ask is because someone I know has a completely boring job where they sit in front of a computer all day. She has weekly quotas that she can finish in only 2 to 3 days. Going over quota has no reward, leaving the job or going home early isn't an option. This leaves her with 2 to 3 days of potential time to work on other things.

    Suggestions???

And, what is the potential reward for the idea?

If it involves working a personal job making personal money using a company's computer and on company time, she could end up in a lot of trouble.

    However.. with that said..

Is she an artist? Cafepress.com offers a wonderful opportunity for those with design knowledge.

Does she know how to create a website or a blog? Add google adwords - depending on the size / traffic of the site, a couple hundred bucks or more every few months can be made.

She can sell unique thrift store / flea market finds on ebay... baby clothes, designer women's clothes, antique items, collectors items, etc.

Some researchers pay money for taking surveys - most you see end up being scams, but some are legit and do pay. Im a member of American Consumer panel and receive anywhere from $4 to $15 per survey. They send them to your email and follow instructions from there.

I agree with Coleroo that doing personal work on company time/equipment might not be such a good idea. If, however, that isn't a problem, online surveys are probably the easiest way to go since they are computer-based. Ebay is always a good option, but kind of hard for her to do from the office unless she takes photos at home and either uploads them to an online server or burns them to a cd then uses work time to actually type and post the listings.

I agree that surveys are a good start. I've reviewed some of my favorite survey sites here.

I also really like Cashduck, although it has fewer offers than it used to. You can still make quite a bit of extra money every month, though. I've written about it here and here.

The blog idea is good but it takes a very long time and a lot of work to get to the point where it starts bringing in significant income.

I know how frustrating it can be. I've been in this situation a lot.

Try building a few websites and then making some money from them either by selling something directly or being an affiliate for someone else (or even Google Adsense).

Ditto that last line being a rather important question...also ditto the personal work on a work computer being a big NOno...but if she can take a laptop in..why not.

Leaving the field of computer work...how about a craft...or reading, or writing (on pen and paper, not the work paid for computer). if you brainstorm at work you can just put the real good stuff online.

Also if interested a second job teaching could leave her with loads of prep work, that can be done at a desk.

Everyone and their mother wants a work at home job like one where you work on the Internet in some fashion.

Many people find themselves in uninteresting jobs and hope to find a shortcut out of that situation. Unfortunately, most people will have to work their way up out of a boring, low status job the old-fashioned way...by doing a really good job at their boring, low status job for a period of years and making small, sometimes lateral moves up the career ladder with correspondingly small pay increases.

You need to establish a track record of responsiblity, professionalism and dedication to your work.

I don't consider online surveys that pay $5 a pop anything more than something to do if you have time on your hands. It's certainly not a long-term solution.

                    Money on the side

One way that does not involve very much work at all is watching your savings and investments grow, ideally through a tax-advantaged plan.

                      Sounds like my life!

Take classes and do homework at work.

Do what you REALLY want with the degree/knowledge.

I've been investigating some work from home opportunities. Like taking customer service calls for various companies. I've applied for 2 and am waiting to hear back.

I can attest the blog thing can be rewarding IF you like what you're blogging about; in my case, finance, investing, prosper.com, etc. I don't make a killing, but with the current trajectory, will be worth my while in a few more months. Right now, just building content and getting some subscribers. The Adsense is the top earner for the site and building it through google blogger is incredibly easy. You have to differentiate yourself though, everyone's starting up a blog these days. I have a sister blog highlighting all the tips and tricks and my experience from my main site; all linked together. good luck.

Online surveys may be a start but don't get carried away with how much mone you'll earn from them. Some sites claim you can earn hundreds per hour..this will not happen, they are bonus money, not a big earner.
They could write ebooks and market them online. There are many affiliate schemes that will let people promote your ebooks and share in the profits.

I train soccer teams in the evening. In 2006 I cleared around 1000 doing this, this year business is good and I will approach clearing 10k.

This is before taxes and writeoffs associated with doing this.
