  • Florida Constructing Toll Road That Promises to Charge EV's as You Drive on it

I don't know how legitimate this is, but the concept is intriguing.

I must admit I was most of the way through that article before I realized they meant charging the battery as opposed to charging for use of the road.

I wonder what modifications would need to be done to existing EVs to be able to use that technology. I have used a charging pad for my phone which is pretty cool but I know only recent models can use them. My car actually has that built in (though it doesn’t work that well and I still use a wired charger).

Inductive charging is an interesting concept for EV's. It will be interesting to see what the cost will be and how effective it is. We can fast-charge our BMW from 30 to 80% in just under half hour. If inductive charging can deliver the same power (and as EV batteries evolve) then you'd need about a 30- mile stretch of road going 60mph to pick up the same charge at the same kWH. Think about it, though, mountain passes, there could now be a "charging lane" to assist EV's getting up and over.

It's a bit of a distraction from what else Florida is doing with its roads, phosphogypsum. Using it in pavement as a means of disposal seems hazardous since it's a material known to the EPA to be cancer-causing and it emits radioactive gases.
      History will judge the complicit.
