  • Stop Washing Your Hair

Andrea Lynch can’t exactly remember the last time she shampooed her hair. Maybe it was last summer? No, more like September. She thinks.

For most Americans, the idea of skipping shampoo for even a day is enough to make us feel a little itchy. But some hair stylists and dermatologists say going a few extra days between shampoos — or ditching the stuff entirely — could actually benefit your tresses.

It's a bit counterintuitive, but those who've tried it are quick to brag about the improved condition of their hair. "I'm thrilled with it; my hair's very shiny and it's just thick," says 34-year-old Lynch, who lives in South Vienna, Ohio...

Interesting. A few years back, I read that it was best to shampoo only every other day at most, so that is what I have done. I have gone a week before without shampooing and my hair wasn't too bad, but that was years ago.

Right now I am on my second day of no shampoo (shower was Tuesday evening - it is now Friday), and my scalp feels a little itchy.

Hmm... I do have thin hair in the front that likes to frizz for no reason, so maybe this is worth a shot, and only doing conditioner.

I've done this for over a year now and my hair has never felt better. My only word of caution to newbies is that there is a transition period. After years of shampooing and stripping your hair of its natural oils, thus increasing production, when you stop your scalp takes a while to figure out how to slow down to a natural rate again. Transition is 3-6 weeks depending on your hair type, so ladies be prepared for a lot of ponytails and keeping your hair off your face during that time. If you stick it out though, I guarantee you'll never regret it!

Twice a week, I scrub my scalp with a baking soda and water mix and rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar. Keeps it feeling silky.

        Hey! What about us men?!

        And, do you use conditioner?

Well I didn't mean to exclude you -- my DH does this too -- its just that since his hair isn't long, he had less of a hard time with the transition.

I do not use conditioner either. Here's where I got my recipes: only dust in the wind: I Said Bye-Bye To Shampoo

Wish I had seen this years ago before I started shaving my head.

              Easing Up on Shampooing Hair

Having natural curly hair, I don's wash it daily. I skip a few days, and even then I don't shampoo. This allows the oils from my scalp to "moisturize" my dry hair.

When I do shampoo, I use natural-based products. Nowhere near as harsh as the cheaper ones in the stores.

                  Hair

After seeing Forensic File TV i had to wash my hair every day because of the invisible particles that stick to your hair. Just walking through home depot you hiar oils pick up a lot of fine dust wood fibers that will probably end up on your pillow and face. No thanks
Your hair is like a fly trap. I would have to wash my pillow everyday

                    Nice sharing.
Your hair naturally produces oils, that may be what they were
referring to. Except it doesn't take 6 weeks for oil to be produced.

I have seen many who have the similar case. Use shampoo regularly but losing hair thickness may be keep themselves clean but loose hair.

My hair is absurdly oily -- it doesn't take 6 hours for that to come back for me.

I've been using liquid body washes for about a year now, and employ a "top down" strategy while showering. Just a quick pass over the head with the lathered up washcloth, and then a full body rinse after the job seems to do the trick for me.

Not sure I like the idea of no soap on the hair, since mine picks up a lot from yard work, and I sweat gallons all over whenever the temp is above 70F.
