  • Generation X glum on retirement prospects: survey

Baby boomers say they are worried about achieving a comfortable retirement, but a new study suggests Generation X is even more pessimistic.

More than two-thirds of Americans aged 27 to 42 don't think they will ever be able to stop working, according to a survey published jointly on Monday by Scottrade and BetterInvesting.

So I must be in that other 1/3. Not only will I stop working, I will stop working before age 59.5.

I'm a Xer and I'm not optimistic. But, that's driving me to save as much as I can and look for alternative ways to generate income when I am old...

All of us sort of count on retirement funds to get us through.... read page 2 of this article. What happens if government decides to tax our 401k's and IRAs, etc?

I'm very pessimistic, and I do maximize my Roth IRA contributions and contribute at least 10% pretax income into tax-deferral accounts. Still, I'm glad I paid in my 40 quarters of Social Security contributions so I can get some benefits if cancer or a blind driver doesn't take me first. And if I don't survive to see the benefits, somewhere there's a widowed senior citizen in an apartment making do on my contributions...

I'm taking my "retirement" now, staying home with DD. I figure when I go back into the work force I'm there to stay until I can't work any more.

              Although I guess technically I don't qualify as Gen X - I'm a few years too old.

Seeker 401k are already going to be taxed when you pull it out. Better question will be, taxing Roth IRAs again.
