  • Looking into investing $35k

It has been a while since I have been here. I bought some stocks/ETFs back in 2009/10. My brokerage account is Tradeking, and I have about 40k in various stocks/ETFs. I have 50k cash in my checking account. I need to put that money to work.
This would be a long term investment. I am looking for some mutual funds, ETFs, or index funds. What would your recommendation be? Tech, total stock market, energy, REIT?... I kinda would rather buy a tech index than stocks in just apple. What would be a good allocation?
I max out my roth IRA and am building up my ROTH TSP. I am military. I owe 7k on my car and have no problem making the payments. I owe nothing else. I save about 2k a month.
    Thank you.

I think you need an asset allocation plan.

First, you decide how much in US stocks, how much in foreign stocks, how much in bonds. You may or may not wish to break it down further. Will you hold reits, emerging markets, precious metals? Will you buy individual securities? Will you focus on dividends? Then look at placement. Try to keep tax-inefficient holdings inside tax-advantaged accounts.

When it is time to add new money, you already know where the money should go. You just follow your plan.

I think you are correct planning for allocation of funds will give a good benefit over time from each and every place you opt to invest in, Go for purchase of mix securities, purchase equity stock for a company and invest in debenture stock in some other company so that you may get fluctuating income in form of dividend on the equity stock and a permanent Interest on the debenture stock, it will help you to generate a continuous income from one side atleast and you may distribute the risk of loss between all if you do so, because the loss at one end will be mitigated by the profit from other end. I think this shall be a good plan for investment.

I have been reading books but between moving, school, and work it is hard to keep up. Most of what the first two posters said is over my head. I was thinking like get my asset allocation from vanguard ETFs. If I use Vanguard as my broker, I can buy and sell them for free. I already have them for my IRA.

I was thinking of putting 2k each into something like these
        VGT - Information tech
        VTI - Total stock market
        VYM - High dividend yield
        VO - mid cap
VEU - Total world ex US

I already have these on my tradeking account
        2.5k VWO - emerging markets
1.5k VTI - total stock market
        4.5k VNQ - REIT
        3.2k VFH - Financials
        3.5k VDE - Energy
        1.3k VAW - Materials
        1.7k VB - small cap

I would probably expend my allocation on my vanguard broker account and use the rest of the $ to spread it out over a couple months. No commission fees. What do you think of something like this?

          What is asset allocation?

Is there something to help you calculate what yours should be?

I think that's super aggressive. Is that what you're looking for? How comfortable will you be with the market swings?
