  • 457 Allocation help

Finally at the point where we can start allocating money toward hubby’s 457. Don’t get a match so focused on maxing out our Roths and my 401K.

In our 40s, so may seem late starting this but it’s a second career and he already has pension from the first and will get one for this job too.

I know to avoid funds with front load and high expense ratios. Trying to figure what the best allocation and diversification is right for us. Any input greatly appreciated or if you know of a good site that might guide us

What is your desired asset allocation? That is where you start. How much do you want in stocks/bonds? Of your stocks, how much do you want in international? And so on. Choosing funds is the last step, not the first.

One approach is to choose the best of what is offered in your 401k and hubby's 457, so that the two together are a complete portfolio, though individually they may not be. (Some would say add the Roths in as well, but I personally view my Roth as a separate pot of money.)

So, a reasonable asset allocation plan for a couple in their 40s might be:

    35% US Large Stock
    10% US Small Stock

    25% Foreign Stock

    30% US Bonds

If you are unsure, try using some free asset allocation tools, such as these:
