  • Allocating my 401K, 23 years old.

    HI everyone,

I have been lurking the forum for a long time now and decided it's time for me to take grasp of my 401K!

I am 23 years old, I have a little over $10K already in my 401K plan. My question is how should I allocate it? I would also like to pick up a few books on this topic, any good suggestions?

    Thank you for your time!

Knowing only your age, I would do this:

    5% PIMCO Total Return
    20% International Index
    75% S&P 500

That will give you all the exposure you need at a very low expense ratio. For higher risk/return you could add some of the small cap index fund too. Re-balance once a yearish.

    For investing books, I like:

The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing- Index focused investing

Although more about lifestyle than investing, I also like the Millionaire Mind

I'm 29 and this is my allocation:

      100% stocks
      35% International
      40% Large Caps
      15% Mid Caps
      10% Small Caps

Assuming the SSgA index funds you have are the lowest expense ratios, I would use those.
