Re: ING Direct vs Emigrant Direct Bank
That sounds nice, but the fact is 'viability' is not an issue. They are an FDIC insured bank and have been for some years. Marketing? They offered 5.25% when no one else offered more than 5.00%. What sort of 'ad' besides that fact would be needed to make that buzzworthy? 0.25% APY is a well-stated 'case' of advantage in my view. Sorry friend, I'd 'like to believe' as you have stated, I simply don't think that highly of my fellow citizens, in general.
Note, I am not necessarily saying that people aren't interested because they are racist, only that they are not comfortable with a bank who is out-front and 'marketing' the idea of being "Black owned."
I, for one, couldn't care less. I will also note that I am white and I have an online savings and it is not with OneUnited. The latter is because I already had my account with another company before I knew of OneUnited and I don't yet have enough reason to hassle with changing.
My point was based on the fact that on this forum we have many 'rate shoppers' who jump from one account to another or who like to talk about what the best place is (even still including ING who has lagged behind for a long time now) to open an online savings. When I posted the summary of online MMA accounts thread, OneUnited was added at the top. HSBC goes to 5.05% and people are talking about it and asking dozens of questions about whether or not they should move their money there, etc. ED announces that they are going to 5.15% and people 'talk' on the forum about that for a couple of weeks. All the while, OneUnited sits there at 5.25% which was the APY on their offering prior to ED's or HSBC's last moves and bascially I saw less than an handful of questions and, of that smattering, most were about it being a "Black owned" bank.
You decide what that means. It means to me, that OneUnited hurts themselves by promoting that they are "Black owned." If they, instead, invested their efforts in making an orange web site or a red piggy bank, they'd be among the most talked about offerings on this forum and elsewhere IMO.
