Finding Cash - Weird One

Generally I have pretty good luck finding lost cash lying around in public when I'm out and about. $20. here, $20. there, sort of an ongoing joke with my family at just how often I come across this stuff. Well today I was doing my daily exercise at our local open space park when I found $140.00 attached to a park sign right in plain view. Not lying on the ground like it had fallen out of someone's pocket but on a sign board that someone purposely attached it too. How does this stuff happen? A hundred people must have walked right past it and never bothered to look up!

I've been watching our local online social media sites for someone that may have lost it but so far nothing. Sad part is I really don't even need the money, still hoping someone at the park posts a lost and found notice. Weird thing is just a couple of years ago I found an envelope near this same park with $1,000. in it. After posting it in our local lost and found sites I was inundated with people lying and saying it was there's but of course no one could give me more exact details about it. In the end I turned it over to the local Police Department and they held it for 90 days. No one claimed it so it was mine after those 90 days.

Anyone else get lucky like this? I thought about turning it into the police again but I don't think $140. bucks is worth the trouble unlike that other $1k I found.

A few years back, I saw $20 blowing down the road. I pulled over for it and found another $380 in the ditch, along with some money from Guatemala.

I feel bad for the poor guy who left it, but how in the world would you ever find the owner.

Another time I bought a couple of books for a guy going through some stuff, $50. And on the way back to my truck, there was $50 on the ground next to my door.

The honest answer for your case is I'd pocket it and keep going. If it were in a wallet with an ID, absolutely I'd track them down. But just leaving it hanging out there? No.

A few other possibilities:

They could have been religious tracks. I'm assuming not since you have an actual $140 count.

It could have been left for the homeless. That's a bad idea in general. Food / water sure! Cash, no way.

The most I've ever found was $20 at a gas station parking lot.

My uncle and a coworker found a brown paper bag with several thousand dollars in it years ago.
They were working at an airport at the time, and the bag was laying out in the grass near a runway.
The Feds got involved and it became a whole thing.
They didn't get to keep the money, and they never found out any details about it

As a kid, I always checked the pay phones, under vending machines and constantly watch the ground as I walk...I don't know that I've found big money but it's always a little bit here and there. I also found 2 adult wallets and one kid's wallet when I used to be able to walk to work.

That being said, I once lost a $50 bill while geocaching. It was just hanging out in my pocket, I should have put it away.
